Mike Rowe's Awesome Advice for America: Shut Off the News
People often turn to reassuring, familiar voices in a time of tragedy, even if they're just celebrities we've come to know and love. Many folks turned to Mike Rowe, unsurprisingly since he's always the most reasonable (see Mike Rowe Issues Tough Love on College and Debt. And It’s Perfect and Mike Rowe Offers Sage Advice: ‘DON’T Follow your Passion…”).
Than anxiety you're feeling? There's a way to fix that...
Listen to the ominous soundtrack that accompanies the next terror attack on Fox. Look at the size of the font, and the lurid backgrounds that announce the next disaster on MSNBC, or the next missing plane on CNN. Listen to the urgency of the announcer as he heralds the latest calamity, and consider the expression on the anchor’s face, as she warns you in somber tones to “stay right where you are,” because “we’ll be right back,” with “more breaking news you can’t afford to miss.”It’s not just the world, Alicia, or all the trouble in it. And it’s not just the news, or our ability to cover so much more of it. It’s our conscious decision to present it like some never-ending promo for Game of Thrones. That’s why you’re anxious. Because the media has discovered that keeping you informed, is not nearly as profitable as keeping you on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
To sum up, it’s human to feel bad in the wake of tragedies like this one, and normal to feel sad when innocent people are murdered. But do yourself a favor - don’t let cable news or social media or anything else suck you into their bottomless pit of high anxiety. Believe me - they will if you let ‘em. And if that happens, you will indeed reach the point of no return.
First: the irony isn't lost on me that LwC is a news-commentary site. Believe me, I get it.
More importantly, I think LwC is one of the few news commentary sites that 100% agrees with Mike Rowe on the issue. No really, watch my video on this very subject created only hours before the Dallas tragedy.
Watch the video. If you haven't, there's no reason to read what comes next. Again, anti-clickbait here, so get with it. Even after what I expressed in the video, the comments section was riddled with accusations of racism. These commenters didn't seem to catch the irony.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: when "let's wait for the facts to come in before rushing to conclusions" becomes a more controversial response than "OUTRAGE!!" we have a problem. Yes, at one point the left had a corner on this game. However, as Mike Rowe pointed out, many "Conservative" outlets have become repeat offenders. You know why? Because "outrage" is more profitable than reason.
How many times have you heard me say (on air) "do NOT take what even I am telling you as fact. I've listed references, but please do your own research." This is met with derision from those in traditional media. Which is why I'm glad that people like Mike Rowe are able to bury them... with a mere Facebook page.
