WATCH: Twitch streamer whines about being 'sexualized' in the gym. Also, she has men pay her for photos on the side.
Last week, a video posted by Twitch partner Jessica Fernandez went viral on Twitter. As of right now, it has 43.1 million views on Twitter and 660k on TikTok.
In the video, Jessica is doing hip thrusts at the gym. It's captioned, "this is how not to approach girls at the gym." Jessica tapes herself and mutters into the microphone, "I hate this, I hate this" and "f***ing feral."
She is apparently referencing a dude standing behind her trying to get his workout in. She has a "stare counter" going for each time he merely glances in her direction. At one point, he offers to re-rack the weights for her. She declines, and he goes away.
That's it. That's all that happens. It's quite boring, really.
“this guy kept making me extremely uncomfortable at the gym… this is why I’ll end up crying on stream bc I feel so grossed out at times with the amount of sexualization I experience. Hopefully this spreads awareness for girls who experience this type of treatment at the gym🥹.”— Jessica49 (@Jessica49) 1674168121
However, Jessica was so offended by this man's behavior that she felt the need to video herself, comment on it, and upload it for millions of people to see how she was "sexualized" while working out.
As a female who enjoys working out in a gym where males are inevitably also present, I have some thoughts. First, a disclaimer: sometimes, dudes can be creepy. It happens. But from what Jessica uploaded, this seems like a bit of an overreaction.
Second, if you want to avoid being ogled in the gym, you should perhaps consider putting on a shirt. I don't care if you don't. Do what you want. But don't go to a public venue in a bra and then be upset when men look at you. That's not "internalized misogyny," it's just common sense.
And third, if Jessica felt so sexualized by this interaction, why upload it for literally millions of people to watch? And open it up to the possibility of more men sexualizing her?
The funniest part about all of this is Jessica apparently has a FanHouse, which is an OnlyFans competitor. Oopsie!

Nothing like complaining to the internet about being sexualized by men while making a living being sexualized by men on the internet. Thanks, feminism!
