Watch: "Captain America" actor claims Captain America shouldn't represent... America
Let's spoil this from the jump. Your favorite clickbait engagement farmers are taking what Anthony Mackie said out of context and only showing you nine seconds of a longer clip. However, what he said was still dumb and pandering, and it doesn't bode well for a movie that's already been plagued with problems. The actor who plays Captain America says that "America" should not be one of the things that defines Captain America.
This was, of course, said in a country that wasn't America as part of a global press tour. Gotta pander to those foreign audiences!
Anthony Mackie explains what Captain America represents for him:
“Captain America represents a lot of different things & I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations. It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity and integrity.”

Mackie spoke to the foreign press in Italy and said, “Captain America represents a lot of different things, and I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations."
There's where the nine-second video making its way around X-Twitter cuts off, and your outrage is supposed to begin. But he then goes on to say, "It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity, and integrity.”
The actor wasn't shitting on America, per se. He was attempting to explain to non-Americans why they should care about a character called "Captain America." But in pandering to a global audience, wound up saying that Captain America doesn't represent American values. The character could be called Captain Italy or Captain Bangladesh and be just as good.
Add it to the list of a movie that has already been plagued with problems, and not just that most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe offerings since Avengers: Endgame have been unmemorable at best and only meant to entertain a niche audience of woke entertainment bloggers at worst.
Captain America: Brave New World was initially called Captain America: New World Order. You can guess why that was changed. Rumor has it that the original cut was so "beat you over the head with it" political that audience members were booing and walking out of the screenings, so there had to be reshoots. And Sabra, a character who is supposed to be like the Captain America of Israel, was changed to a high-ranking US official because... Israel.
I know that you know that I know that you know where things go from here. Our side reacts to the out-of-context nine seconds. The Left overreacts to our side reacting. President Trump posts something on Truth Social. Fox News and CNN get involved. Bloggers claim it's raaaaaacist for you not to go see a movie you weren't going to see anyway. In every interview Anthony Mackie does for the next few weeks, he'll be asked about the outrage and to opine on Donald Trump's immigration policy. And Harrison Ford, who is also in the movie, will realize that he is too old for this sh*t. Though he'll probably still sign on to do sequels for Regarding Henry and Working Girl.
If the studio was hoping for Captain America: Brave New World to be a return to the good old days when people looked forward to new Marvel content, better luck with Daredevil: Born Again. I want to believe the latter will be as sick as the previews make it look. But it's still Disney, so... we'll see.
