At an Arkansas hearing over strengthening malpractice rights for patients, a GOP lawmaker caught everyone off guard by asking a witness about their genitalia. Matt McKee, believed to be a cis male, is a republican state senator. Dr. Gwendolyn Herzig is a beautiful and brave transgender healthcare professional who opposes the strengthened malpractice protections.

McKee pointed out how Herzig is now a transwoman who is believed to have been a man at one point. The senator was curious. "You said that you're a trans woman? Do you have a penis?"

Awkward silence was quickly met with jeers and outrage.

The hearing was for Senate Bill 199. It would allow minors who had permanent, life-altering, irreversible, genital mutilation procedures up to thirty years past their eighteenth birthday the ability to sue for malpractice. Critics who oppose these increased malpractice rights, like Dr. Herzig, view these permanent, life-altering, irreversible, genital mutilation procedures as "gender-affirming care." And believe not encouraging and celebrating the procedure makes you transphobic.

Republican Sen. Gary Stubblefield, the official behind the increased malpractice rights, says this legislation is aimed at forcing medical providers to stop offering what some call "gender-affirming care" to minors.

The idea that teenagers, let alone little children, are capable of making such life-altering decisions is not only brand new, but it's absurd. A society that allows them to do this is a deeply broken society.

It's part of a broader debate that has grown contentious. Supporters who claim without evidence these procedures are "gender-affirming care" recently staged an insurrection at the Oklahoma capitol. The debate has also taken over scholastic sports, where women born that way believe newer women both with lots of testosterone have an unfair advantage. They also believe it's inappropriate for those women to walk around the locker room with their dicks out.

Unclear is what Dr. Herzig's presumed penis has to do with the debate over Senate Bill 199. Or why Sen. McKee asked.
