Watch: Bath & Body Works employee gets pepper sprayed confronting shoplifters, so of course SHE gets fired
An employee from Bath & Body Works got pepper sprayed by shoplifters. Of course, the company fired HER for leaving the store. Making any attempt to stop thievery goes against corporate policy. You know, in the name of keeping employees safe.
Side note: Bath & Body Works Inc. is a publicly traded company whose 2nd and 3rd latest shareholders are Vanguard and Blackrock.
The anonymous female employee told local media that two women filled bags of stolen goods, telling the employees to "have a nice day" as they left the store. The employee followed them to get their license plates, which were covered with plastic bags. When she told the two thieves that they were on video, one of them attacked the employee with pepper spray.
"I went into a defensive position. I couldn’t see, and I couldn’t tell where I was."

According to the BBWI Employee Handbook, employees are not allowed to:
- Accuse a customer of shoplifting
- Leave the store to follow a shoplifter or write down a license plate or vehicle description
- Take photos or record video of customers, shoplifters, vehicles, or license plates
- Contact mall security or the police
- Notify the police without notifying corporate first
According to the BBWI Shoplifting Handbook, thieves are allowed to:
- Take whatever they want
- Pepper spray employees
- Probably accuse someone of being raaaaaacist
WAVY-10 did not provide a statement from the company in the news report. If I were to guess, it would be something like "derpity derp zero-tolerance policy," and that they had to fire the employee for her own safety.
It is another example of why it's not worth getting involved when dealing with a corporation. If it's a small business and an actual member of your community, then by all means, do something. We all need to look out for each other. But these global corporations have made it clear they don't care about you, and that they will always side with the criminal.
