Personal opinion (note the byline), I don't care for the "elites" vs "unwashed masses" narrative. Not a fan of identity politics. What with not being a liberal. Which is not to say I don't agree with some of the anger toward elites. Or don't understand where it comes from. Just look at the recent Daily News layoffs. As notorious tumbler-merchant Ben Shapiro points out.

People who think that jobs being lost at the New York Daily News is a national tragedy, but jobs being lost in the steel industry is totally fine because those are a bunch of rubes in the rust belt anyway. What President Trump does better than virtually any other politician on the American scene is he conveys that he really does care about people who are in these industries, the people who are doing the so-called “dirty jobs” that people on the coast tend to think the illegal immigrants are willing to do.

I'm not saying local news layoffs aren't a problem. It is. A lot of good journalists doing important work are being laid off. To make room for more hot take artists. Local beat reporters struggling to make rent are being let go. So CNN frees up salaries to hire another talking head who can set their hair on fire any time Trump tweets. Journalists are losing their jobs to a new economy. Same as factory workers in the midwest. Only instead of automation, journalists are losing to a culture which thinks it's entitled to your free work. As long as that "free work" is on the internet.

Reporters and blue collar workers are in the same boat.

Except "elitists" who run the media only feel one class of worker deserves our sympathy and support. The other should get with the program and accept the global economy.

A factory worker in Allentown is struggling to make ends meet, same as a reporter from Park Slope. Yet we only give a s*** about the latter. Then wonder why the former is so angry about it.

Which is how we got Trump.
