University of Florida president sets gold standard in responding to terrorism, calls out his pro-Hamas peers in academia
When a terrorist group parachutes into a concert, starts murdering people, rapes women before murdering them, goes into people's homes and drags their kids out, AND decapitates babies, calling the group "bad" should be easy. You would think. Not on college campuses. It's what makes the University of Florida's Ben Sasse stand out. He calls the terrorists BAD without hedge.
As a comparison, here's an example from Yale who also writes for the New York Times and the Washington Post. On the morning of October 7th, when Hamas launched their terror attack on Israel, not unlike Harvard Students, there were professors at Yale who were cheering Hamas on.
Now you understand why these bars from Ben Sasse stand out:
"I will not tiptoe around this simple fact: What Hamas did is evil and there is no defense for terrorism. This shouldn't be hard. Sadly, too many people in elite academia have been so weakened by their moral confusion that, when they see videos of raped women, hear of a beheaded baby, or learn of a grandmother murdered in her home, the first reaction of some is to "provide context" and try to blame the raped women, beheaded baby, or the murdered grandmother. In other grotesque cases, they express simple support for the terrorists."
"This thinking isn't just wrong, it's sickening. It's dehumanizing. It is beneath people called to educate our next generation of Americans."
Sasse is wrong about one thing. It SHOULD be beneath people called to educate the next generation of Americans to make such sickening comments. Or to not have the ability to say Hamas is bad, full stop. OR, if all else fails, be able to wait longer than a few hours after a terror attack to tweet that Israel was asking for it. All these things SHOULD be beneath people called to educate the next generation of Americans.
Everything we know about academia proves that it is not.
