So, Bob Dole has been celebrated as being a hero these past few days. After hearing of his passing, the flags were flown at half-staff, numerous high-profile individuals shared words of condolences, and the country prepared to give him the send-off he deserved. Bob Dole was also a bit of a hero in Kansas, in particular, as well, the state for which he served on behalf of in the U.S. Senate from 1969 to 1996 as a Republican.

At his funeral, his daughter read an excerpt from a letter he had written to say goodbye. It’s a demonstration of how everyone should hope to leave this world: with dignity, class, humor, and maybe getting a few extra hits in at the left.

“As I make the final walk on my life’s journey, I do so without fear. Because I know that I will, again, not be walking alone. I know that God will be walking with me,” the late senator wrote. “I also confess that I’m a bit curious to learn and find if I am correct in thinking that heaven will look a lot like Kansas and to see, like others who have gone before me, if I will still be able to vote in Chicago.”

Pure unadulterated poetry.

As a man who has lived in Kansas for many years, I can testify that there are far worse places. Chicago for one, and pretty much every other liberal sh*thole one might name.

Here’s to hoping Bob is correct in assuming the majesty of Heaven but wrong in assuming Democrats will be registering him to vote even before the dirt settles over his grave.
