"Breaking Bad" actor ignored advice of his conservative doctor and is lucky to be alive: "The conservative was right"
"Breaking Bad" star Bob Odenkirk shunned his "conservative" doctor's medical advice for political reasons. Now after being lucky to be alive after suffering a heart attack, he's beginning to think maaaaaybe he should have put politics aside and trusted his advice.
Odenkirk was seeing a doctor for twenty years, he told the “Don’t Ask Tig” podcast. Then tragedy struck. The actor learned his doctor had different political opinions than him. It was the signs up in the office that said they don't accept Obamacare. Not so much a political opinion as much as a "we need to pay employees and keep the electricity on" opinion. Though the actor could have thought "Obamacare" was used as a racist dog whistle. Lefties thought that back then.
The conservative doctor had him taking statins to lower his cholesterol. When Odenkirk questioned the science, his doctor told him to just take the medication anyway.
Odenkirk switched to a doctor who didn't have an opposing political, who told the actor not to take any medication. The actor suffered a heart attack shortly after.
Lesson learned! “The cranky conservative jackass was right because he was a good doctor. His political point of view doesn’t have anything to do with his ability to judge your health and your health choices and needs.”
What's most absurd is that, if I understand the story correctly, it's not like Odenkirk got into a fight with the doctor. The conservative doctor wasn't wearing a "Hillary for Prison" button or jokingly asking if Bob's middle name was "Hussein" like that Kenyan in the Oval Office. The doctor just had signs up about a piece of legislation that was less a political statement as much as it was a medical insurance issue.
Yet that was enough for the liberal actor to decide he couldn't be in the same building with man.
I'm forty-eight. I have an increasing amount of awkward conversations with doctors lately. Politics and the news don't come up ever.
