Boston Now One Step Closer To Allowing ILLEGAL Citizens To Vote In Local Elections
Most countries don’t tend to allow noncitizens to vote. Which is a very sensible and fair rule to have. Why should we start allowing people to vote who don’t have a stake in this country to the extent a native-born citizen or someone who worked very hard to earn that right does? And that is just on the surface level of concern. How can we know that noncitizens or “residents” want what is best for this country? If we begin to allow foreigners to vote in our elections, we are de facto allowing them to at least contribute to where the future of this country goes. This subsequently makes the votes of actual citizens meaningless.
This is also why the very woke City of Boston has decided it will allow residents with “legal status” to vote.
“The Boston City Council approved a measure Wednesday that would allow people with “legal status” to vote in municipal elections, even if they are not American citizens.
The home rule petition was passed by an 8-4 vote. Mayor Michelle Wu and the state Legislature must approve the measure, and it still faces a long road toward implementation. If enacted, it would allow non-citizen immigrants who live in Boston and pay taxes to participate in the city’s elections. Wu’s office said Thursday that it was reviewing the petition.
Councilor Kendra Lara, who proposed the measure, spoke about her personal reasons for pushing this. When she first ran for public office, Lara described how her father campaigned on her behalf but could not vote for her.
‘My father, although he is a 30-year legal resident of this city, could not vote for his youngest daughter. And his story is the story of thousands of legal residents in the city of Boston who work, pay taxes, raise their children, and participate in every way in strengthening the fabric of our city, yet cannot cast their ballot for the representatives who are making decisions about their daily lives,’ Lara said during Wednesday’s meeting. It was her last as a city councilor.”
“Legal status” just means we have allowed you to stay as our guest. But a guest does not get to just demand things because they are simply staying in a place. We have a system in place that affords residents the ability to gain citizenship if they choose to work for it. If they don't use that system, the door won’t hit them on the way out. If they are too lazy to go through the process of becoming a citizen, they deserve no say in the way things work.
That said, I think we all know Boston would not be fighting for the “rights” for residents to vote unless it kept them in power.
