Boy Scouts of America File Bankruptcy Amid Sexual Abuse Scandal
Don't trust adults alone with your kids. That's the conclusion I'm drawing since sexual abuse scandals seem to happen wherever adults who are not the parents are alone with children. Sorry, it's not just the Catholic Church which has sexual abuse scandals. Add the Boy Scouts of America (you should have already) to the list, in addition to the school system. For today, Tuesday February 18th, the Boy Scouts of America have filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
IRVING, TX – February 18, 2020 – The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) today announced that the national organization has filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code to achieve two key objectives: equitably compensate victims who were harmed during their time in Scouting and continue carrying out its mission for years to come. The BSA intends to use the Chapter 11 process to create a Victims Compensation Trust that would provide equitable compensation to victims.
That's going to be an uphill battle, but I'd wager the BSA will still go on in some form. My guess is, this sexual abuse thing has gone on for decades. That just seems to be the way of it whenever adults who want to be around kids are around kids without those kids' parents. No, not all BSA scout leaders are pedophiles. But neither are all teachers, priests or ministers.
“The BSA cares deeply about all victims of abuse and sincerely apologizes to anyone who was harmed during their time in Scouting. We are outraged that there have been times when individuals took advantage of our programs to harm innocent children,” said Roger Mosby, President and Chief Executive Officer. “While we know nothing can undo the tragic abuse that victims suffered, we believe the Chapter 11 process – with the proposed Trust structure – will provide equitable compensation to all victims while maintaining the BSA’s important mission.”
This is terrible of me, but I'm often terrible. After reading this news, which is awful, I am honestly wondering when comedians who love to tell priests are rapist jokes (and plenty of comedians tell those jokes), will add both teachers sexing up their students and Boy Scout leaders diddling for merit badges to their comedic rotation.
Don't yell at me saying "It's not funny! HOW DARE YOU!" Comedians have been telling the priest jokes for eons. Why not add the Boy Scouts to the list? I wasn't the one who started it, I'm merely suggesting it.
Just as I'd merely suggest that parents make sure an adult they actually trust and know is alone with their children if those children are alone with an adult they don't know all that well. These sexual abuse cases are far more common than they should be, and it would be naive to assume it's only a Catholic Church problem.
Nowhere is safe ever, but thinking the rule of never leaving an adult you don't know well alone with a minor is a pretty good idea, yeah?
