BERKELEY: Crazed Protesters Force Butcher Shop to Post Sign Against Animal Slaughter
If you want to observe unshaven feminists in their natural habitat, rejoice. You need search no further than Berkeley, California (see UC Berkeley Adds ‘Laser Hair Removal’ to Transgender Healthcare Plan and Berkeley Radio Station Cancels Atheist Richard Dawkins Over ‘Islamophobia’…). It's the liberal land of (non-dairy) milk and (ethically sourced) honey. Also, so many protests.
Speaking of which, a clan of hairy-legged nude hippies decided a good way to spend time was covered in blood in front of a butcher shop. Artsy.
The owners of The Local Butcher Shop on Cedar Street agreed, under duress, to put the sign upon exchange for a promise by animal-rights activists to stop holding weekly demonstrations in front of the store. The Bay Area chapter of the national non-profit Direct Action Everywhere has protested — sometimes half-naked and covered in fake blood — while butchery classes are in session every Sunday since April. The group, which is also known as DXE, says it will only hold two more protests if the new sign, which says, “Attention: Animals’ lives are their right. Killing them is violent and unjust, no matter how it’s done,” stays up for the next year.
Monica Rocchino, who owns The Local Butcher Shop with her husband and former Chez Panisse chef Aaron Rocchino, said she considers the deal extortion.“The most palatable option to us was to put that sign up” instead of facing more demonstrations, she said. “The protests impacted the neighbors and local businesses more than it impacted us…so it felt like the most respectful thing to do.”
To Bay Area omnivores, The Local Butcher Shop might seem like an odd target. The small Gourmet Ghetto shop emphasizes locally sourced and sustainably raised meat and encourages the use and consumption of the whole animal.
There's nothing eco nuts won't do when it comes to saving ze animals (see WATCH: Moronic Animal Rights Activists Strip Naked To Protest Fur). Disrupting the peace of mind and livelihoods of these innocent folks is all just one small price to pay for making a statement. All's fair in protests and PETA meetings.
This is unacceptable for obvious reasons. An attack on a meatery is an attack on us all. Especially when the victim of all this is God's gift to mankind...
An interesting side note? You've probably noticed most protesting animal rights activists tend to be of leftist inclination. Which means many of them, if asked about abortion, would likely agree that ripping limbs off of womb-dwelling babies is totes okay. But when it comes to sizzling bacon, piglets should have the same rights as humans or something. Maybe it's because we've been mistaking their plus-sized models for buttered hogs. #SaveTheOinklets
