No, #ESPYS. Caitlyn Jenner is Not Courageous...
Tonight's the night. ESPN is giving reality TV and tabloid star Caitlyn Jenner the "Arthur Ashe Courage Award" ... because saying that you want to be a woman, even though you're a man, is now considered courageous.
Last year it was Michael Sam, for being the first person in history to tell people he was gay. This year, it's this.
Not everyone agrees:
"I can understand and sympathize with the torment Bruce Jenner has endured all these years, but I don't think it rises to the level of courage," said Frank Deford, a National Public Radio commentator and sportswriter, in an interview with The Times. In a June interview with sports radio host Dan Patrick, Costas said he wished Jenner "all the happiness and … peace of mind in the world," before adding, "I'm pretty sure they could have found someone who was much closer to being actively involved in sports, who would have been more deserving of what this award represents."
Sportscaster Bob Costas called the award to Jenner "a crass exploitation play, a tabloid play," while others lamented that Jenner's selection pushed out lesser-known, more deserving candidates for the honor.
One of those 'more deserving candidates' is Lauren Hill, who impacted 'millions of people' through her battle with cancer. Read more about her story here. She's being honored with the ESPY for "this will shut up the transphobes who think someone with cancer is more deserving than a famous celebrity."
Few points:
Caitlyn Jenner hasn't won anything. 'Caitlyn Jenner' has never even been an athlete. 'Caitlyn' Jenner's accomplishments in athletics are no greater than yours or mine. If Caitlyn Jenner did something really brave in sports, if Caitlyn really became an icon, there'd be a case. But That's not the case. Also, there are athletes who actually have.
Courage? Lauren Hill raised over 5 million for cancer awareness, actually played on a team with a tumor in her brain, and ultimately died of cancer. Political correctness aside, how much money has Caitlyn Jenner raised for Cancer... or anyone not named Caitlyn Jenner?
Courage? 'Caitlyn' still has his penis. He didn't even go through with the full transition. Caitlyn is a quitter. Be a man and at least lose the pecker.
Do we really want to become a culture who sweeps all of those honorable men and women aside… because a man slapped on some fake tits?
