Watch: Charles Barkley To Host Primetime Show On CNN As Network Desperately Tries To Boost Ratings
CNN has snagged Charles Barkley in its latest attempt to be less partisan. During an NBA pregrame show on Saturday, Gayle King announced Barkley will host a primetime program called "King Charles". The program will air every Wednesday.
King explained,"What I think is so great for the both of us is that it's live TV. And to me, live TV is like working without a net. Don't you feel that? So whatever happens, happens."
Barkley and King both revealed they hadn't been looking for another job, as Barkley explained, "When they said something, I said, hell no, I don't want to be on TV more. And then - this is when they first brought it up, and they said, 'What about Gayle?' And I said, 'Gayle who?' And they said Gayle King, and I said, 'oh yeah, I'll work with Gayle.' That's the only way."
\u201cComing this fall, King Charles with Gayle King and Charles Barkley will air weekly on CNN in primetime running into 2024. Hear Gayle and Charles talk about their new show on @NBAonTNT.\u201d— CNN Communications (@CNN Communications) 1682184462
The pair explained that, though the show will discuss politics, they will do so without any political labels. Barkley said that all he wants is people to be honest with him, as opposed to trying to get clickbait. He also said, as an example, he doesn't want to just glaze over all the mass shootings that keep happening. He specifically mentioned a young Texas girl who was recently shot in her cheerleader uniform after her friend approached the wrong car. However, he then said that even though he's a "pro-gun guy," it shouldn't be "easy" to get guns. Which sounds a teensy bit political. But we'll see.
This announcement comes just as CNN is desperately in need of a ratings boost. According to Mediaite, the network averaged just 470,000 viewers last Thursday, compared to Fox News's average of 1.48 million viewers and 2.54 million prime time viewers. It must be because they canned Brian Stelter.
