Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to coast to victory in the gubernatorial race. It's a dangerous place to be because you don't want to assume anything. If I'm advising DeSantis, I'm telling him every morning he is two points down in the polls and campaign accordingly. But dangit if Charlie Crist isn't intent on handing DeSantis an easy victory. Crist's choice of teachers' union president Karla Hernandez Mats is proof of it.

On the surface, it's a dumb move. Two of the reasons DeSantis grew in popularity are by opposing lockdown measures and defending parents and kids against woke indoctrination in schools. Mats attacked parents for opposing lockdowns and raising their voices at school board meetings. But the bigger problem is her (allegedly) looking the other way while one of her union members was molesting students.

The teacher in question is Wendell Nibbs. From a Miami Herald article: "Police arrested Nibbs on Nov. 30, 2017. Nibbs, 53, is set to stand trial in June on charges that he sexually assaulted two students inside the private office in his classroom. On Wednesday, Nibbs was arrested again on two more charges of raping students. One girl said she believes he may be the father of her child. Three former students are suing Miami-Dade Schools, and their lawyers say they plan to bring two more lawsuits on behalf of the two girls who recently came forward."

The Herald had even attempted to get a response from Mats at the time of the article.

Crist won the nomination on Tuesday. He chose his running mate on Friday. His running mate has a scandal on Saturday. Vetting is not a Crist strong suit. Nor is being a competent candidate.

Unless Crist is playing 4-D chess. Maybe he's only appearing to be incompetent in order to lure DeSantis into a false sense of security. That could be a possibility.
