MAHA Czar? Popular chef lays out ten ways he'd help restore the restaurant industry under President Trump
MAHA-mania should be running wild this week, as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is poised to be confirmed as the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Sen. Susan Collins said she was voting for him and is usually the holdout we all wait for to make a decision. Pending the Swamp finding an excuse for a delay, Kennedy will be in charge. The seed oil buyback programs can begin. YOU get a metal canister of beef tallow! And YOU get a metal canister of beef tallow!
RFK wants to focus on healthier food, and if he is looking outside Washington DC to accomplish that, Chef Andrew Gruel would be a great person to speak to. He fantasy-booked his platform should the opportunity arise to be named Restaurant Czar.
The restaurant and bar industry has had a rough four years. I have good friends who own two near me, and you can imagine the struggle they went through: being shut down during the pandemic and then subjected to a Biden Administration that made everything more expensive at every level of running the business and putting food on the tables. Here's how Chef Gruel would turn things around, not just for the restaurants but also for the communities surrounding them.
My restaurant czar 10-point platform:
1. Payroll tax scale that brings taxes down as you pay people more. It's an incentive to increase the minimum wage without the legislation or mandate
2. Protect natural gas from being banned
3. Tax write-offs for buying food within a… https://t.co/M7ieQ0ZbeL

Some key points that make a lot of sense even as a non-restauranteur.
Tax write-offs for buying food within a 50-mile radius of business. Shop local. Get fresher, healthier food. And the write-offs help keep the overhead down, which keeps the cost to customers down, which encourages customers to eat out, which increases business and creates jobs. And so on.
Cut federal school lunch programs and pay restaurants directly to cook for schools using domestic, unprocessed products. This is something you can form a Million MAHA Mom March around. Someone smarter than me can do the math. Cousin Elon has a few guys at his disposal. But I count at least fifteen restaurants surrounding my neighborhood elementary school alone. You cannot tell me finding a way to work closely with any five of them (each gets a day of the week) wouldn't be both coast effective AND provide our kids with healthier lunch items.
Tax deductions for more restaurant expenses (building upgrades, remodels, expansion, charity meals, etc). A lot of the issues with expansion or even staying in business are the overhead costs of doing *waves hands* anything. This is a no-brainer.
Set up coop programs at docks nationwide for fishermen to sell directly to restaurants with no middlemen. This combines shopping locally for fresher food AND keeping costs down. Another no-brainer.
America elected Donald Trump to disrupt how this country is run. Everyone who voted for him has different ideas about how, or specific areas to be disrupted. Case in point: Cousin Elon. The overall theme, though, is replacing mindless bureaucrats with people who have real business experience. The way the bureaucrats did things wasn't working. If Americans with real business experience ran their business the same way, they wouldn't have them.
We need people to instill common sense in how our government is run, and ending the way the government makes things harder on local businesses and the communities they serve is a simple way to start. "Restaurant Czar" Andrew Gruel would also be a great way to start.
