CNN's Chris Cuomo actually did something right. Someone check the temperatures of Hell. He and CNN's black hole conspiracy theorist Don Lemon discussed the Bush funeral. Which Lemon used as a segue for Trump bashing. Chris Cuomo had none of it, and completely dressed Lemon down.

Lemon: “They showed the ultimate respect for the office. They do not have to show respect for someone who does not respect them, someone who tweets out pictures of them behind bars. You don’t have to show respect for that kind of person. Let me show you what I would have done.”

Lemon demonstrates petty behavior.

Cuomo: “You’re petty and small.”

Lemon: “I’m not petty and small. That’s real, brother. That’s real.”

Cuomo: “Real petty and small.”

Lemon then tried desperately to raise himself, as if his pettiness makes him a better person for being an ass. It's the tribalist way.

That's when Cuomo said something brilliant. I know. Cuomo and brilliant are two words which have never gone together. So mark the date and time: "There's a beauty to life that sometimes transcends what's obvious and angry in the moment."

We often get so lost in tribalism, in our fight over laws and cultural shifts that affect us all, we often lose sight of things larger than ourselves. In this case, the office of the presidency. Cuomo is right, Lemon is wrong. The funeral of George H. W. Bush was about honoring a president and that president's life. As should all presidential funerals be, those in attendance are there to honor the office. All the past presidents who attend the next presidential funeral, all of that president's political foes in attendance, are there to honor the office. I expect George Bush, Clinton, Trump, Obama, whomever, to behave with nothing but class at the funeral of Jimmy Carter. If Carter is the first to kick it. I'm just going with the odds.

There's nothing wrong with being a partisan. But if you're going to be a partisan hoping to score political points for your side, a funeral isn't the place. Whatever party that president belonged to. Can we agree?
