That dude who zoomed into court while driving with a suspended license? Turns out the court made a mistake...
A video went viral after a man called into Zoom court while driving with a suspended license. Subsequently, the man was ordered to turn himself in to authorities after the judge was baffled as to why he would do that. However, it turns out his license was actually supposed to be reinstated over two years ago and he is yet another victim of government employee incompetence, aka a “clerical error.”
'It's very embarrassing' says man who went viral for driving during courtwww.youtube.com
"It's very embarrassing," said Corey Harris, 44, about learning that video showing him driving during a recent court hearing went viral.
"With the type of ties that I have with the church and the community, it's very embarrassing."
Harris appeared before Judge Cedric Simpson in Ann Arbor earlier this month for a misdemeanor charge of driving on a suspended license.
His license was suspended in 2010 for unpaid child support, however, the suspension was supposed to be lifted in 2022. And because of sheer incompetence, the man spent two days in jail last week.
7 News Detroit asked Harris what was he thinking when he made his appearance in court via video where he was seen driving.
"What was I thinking? I was thinking about getting my wife medical help. That's what I was thinking," Harris said. "I wasn't thinking about the fact that I got a suspended license. I don't care about all that."
I don't think I saw his wife in the car with him and I remember him saying he was pulling into "his doctor's office." So that is weird. Also, even if that is true, I don't appreciate him going on Zoom while driving instead of pulling over. I don't care if he is the victim of a clerical error.
Harris said, "Always double-check behind these workers because they will say that they will do something and they don't do it," Harris said.
He has probably explained this story at least 50 times as of writing this. And yet, the former story is the one that people will remember. Although, his record will show the truth eventually, (as long as the court clerk does their job this time) the damage has already been done.
When you watch the original video, Harris was flabbergasted by the situation, as he should have been because he was not even given the option to explain himself. Although the judge was going off the information that was provided to him, it’s still not right that Harris was sent to jail without even being able to say a word. However, it is a little weird that Harris didn't even try to speak up but I am not here to victim shame.
Wouldn't he have had trouble renewing his registration at the DMV? Wouldn't that have been a sign that he should have gotten things straightened out? Also, it was 12 years since his license was suspended. Didn't he have to get a new one?
As Harris said, always triple-check and don't rely on government employees to do what they are supposed to do. Because more often than not, you are dealing with sheer incompetence. And for the record, his advice should go both ways, as I hope he remembers to pay his child support from now on.
