Guess what? If you live in California, your credit card is gonna start tracking your firearm purchases
The Constitution says “shall not be infringed.” You can’t get any clearer than that. But officials in California don’t care about that. They are still doing what they can to try and “infringe” on your Second Amendment rights. And when they have exhausted all options, ironically, the credit card companies jump right in to save the day.
Major credit card companies American Express, Visa, and Mastercard will begin tracking gun store purchases in California.
According to The Washington Examiner:
“Mastercard, Visa, and American Express are reportedly preparing to equip California firearms and ammunition retailers with a merchant code that would track gun purchases. This comes as a new state law allowing banks to monitor suspicious weapons purchases is set to go into effect in 2025.
Merchant category codes are four-digit numbers given to retailers that allow credit card companies to track and gather information on a cardholder’s purchase. Last year, the major credit card companies paused their work on applying MCCs after being met with opposition from Second Amendment advocates from various states.
Republicans praised the prominent credit card companies’ decision to halt the MCC implementation.
Meanwhile, proponents such as Guns Down America and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) say that using MCCs to track firearm purchases will help prevent gun violence.”
We all know that this will do nothing to prevent gun violence. The majority of gun crime is committed by people who obtain the weapon illegally. That fact is so undeniably true that even Politico has “fact-checked” it as “mostly true.
When Australia banned guns, a study concluded that it had no effect on the gun homicide rate. When Washington D.C. banned guns in 1976, the number of homicides rose from 188 in 1976 to 364 in 1988, and then up to 454 in 1993. The Supreme Court struck that ban down and the gun homicide rate declined down to 88 in 2012. Defensive gun use is also four to five times more common than gun crimes.
There is a countless amount of evidence that suggests guns do more good than harm. But officials in California hate that as it appears their goal is to set the entire state on fire. Because if the goal is to “end gun violence” they would stop decriminalizing crime and letting thugs run wild. But rather than do that, they have fueled lawlessness while they work hard each year to get more law-abiding citizens disarmed. The only difference now is that they have the major card companies doing their dirty work.
“The credit card companies said that the MCC, which was approved by the International Organization for Standardization in 2022, would not reveal information about the customer purchasing the gun or individual items purchased, but would provide information about where the weapons were purchased, CBS News reported.”
The goal of all of this is to get less people armed. It’s to scare people into not buying a firearm. Even if people are engaging in Constitutionally protected rights, people don’t like to hear the words “track” and “purchases” in the same sentence. And that makes sense because you don’t just throw away your freedoms or rights just because you have nothing to worry about or you are not doing anything wrong.
That said, I heard Discover has impeccable customer service.
