ADL issues statement lashing out at Dave Chappelle's 'antisemitic' jokes from SNL
I denounce anti-Semitism in all its forms. And I stand with my friends in the Jewish community.
The Anti-Defamation League issued a statement Monday morning blasting SNL for jokes made by Dave Chappelle. Chappelle, as part of his fifteen-minute monologue, joked about the Kanye West drama that was in the news concerning antisemitic comments he made.
Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the ADL, says in a tweet: "We shouldn't expect @DaveChappelle to serve as society's moral compass, but disturbing to see @nbcsnl not just normalize but popularize #antisemitism. Why are Jewish sensitivities denied or diminished at almost every turn? Why does our trauma trigger applause?"

Unclear is how Greenblatt feels NBC "normalized" and "popularized" antisemitism. Or what trauma he feels the audience was applauding. The SNL audience didn't applaud Kanye's comments. They applauded Chappelle's jokes about Kanye's comments in the context of a comedy bit.
"I've probably been doing this thirty-five years now. And early on in my career, I learned there are two words in the English language you should never say together in sequence. And those words are 'the' and 'Jews.'"
"It's the rule of perception. if they're black, it's a gang. If they're Italian, it's a mob. And if they're Jewish, it's a coincidence and you should never speak about it."

Dave Chappelle is no stranger to controversy over his comedy performances. The comedian has been embroiled in a heated rivalry with... you know. One where the comedian gets regularly canceled on Twitter but responds "I don't give a f*ck. Twitter's not a real place."
As of this writing, neither Chappelle nor SNL has commented on the ADL statement. Kanye has also been quiet.
