Crime is out of control in liberal cities. Washington, DC, is one of those liberal cities. And while those of us with functioning brains can see a connection between the ludicrous criminal justice reforms instituted by progressive DAs and politicians and the skyrocketing crime, the left is going to keep blaming the usual suspects: racism, capitalism, and a litany of phobias.

But when a group of hoodlums decides to steal a puppy at gunpoint before allegedly shooting other people and robbing some more, I don’t see how racism can be to blame when they are arrested and then returned to the streets, and that’s exactly what happened in Washington, DC, just last week.

On April 14, Pablo—an 11-week-old puppy—was stolen from his owners at gunpoint.

According to the New York Post, “10 minutes after Pablo was taken, the suspects allegedly shot two men […] as well as committing [sic] an armed robbery.”

Metropolitan Police raided an apartment after the little crime spree was completed and located four men in possession of Pablo, firearms, and drugs. They were arrested, and three juveniles present in the apartment were taken into custody.

Hours later, the US Attorney’s Office announced that the four adults were not being charged and were released, stating, “The U.S. Attorney’s Office did not move forward Friday with charges against the four adults who were arrested. The investigation is continuing.and [sic] we have no further comment at this time.”

DC Assistant Police Chief Morgan Kane stated, “Our intention is to investigate further and have these charges reinstated…We’re not closing it and moving on.”

Now, the comments by the US Attorney’s Office sound far more final than those of Chief Kane, but let’s assume the chief’s statement is closer to the truth. What about these people having possession of the dog is ambiguous to the point of not being enough evidence? At a minimum, they must be accessories to the crime. Could they not be held on that? Additionally, is it not a crime to carry unlicensed weapons in DC? What about possession of narcotics? I fail to see how there was a lack of evidence to charge these people with something.

But hey, I’m only concerned about getting criminals off the streets. There’s no telling what kind of rationalizations the US Attorney’s Office and DC police went through to justify releasing these obviously violent criminals. There is equity to be concerned about, after all.

Pablo has since been returned to his owners.

And the criminals have been returned to the streets. All is well in Washington, DC.
