Leftists are a ban-happy lot. From banning "Zionists" at Slut Walks to attempting to shut veterans out of universities, leftists have never come across a person, place, or thing they didn't want to legally prohibit. Their latest attempt at furthering the grasp of the nanny state? Banning menthol cigarettes. Because black people smoke them. Yes, really...

U.S. Sen. Edward Markey is calling for a ban on menthol cigarettes, arguing that tobacco companies disproportionately target African-Americans when they market and promote the cigarettes.

The Massachusetts Democrat is leading a group of fellow senators in calling on the Food and Drug Administration to prohibit the cigarettes, noting that African-Americans suffer the greatest burden of tobacco-related mortality of any ethnic or racial group in the U.S.

The letter to the FDA sent earlier this week was also signed by fellow Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren, of Massachusetts, Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, of Rhode Island, and Richard Blumenthal, of Connecticut.

First of all, why are these Dems assuming black people exclusively smoke menthols?

Second, these senators seem to be suggesting cigarette companies are conspiring to murder black people with their mint-flavored cancer sticks. Which is about as credible as Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster. The truth is quite simple, really. Cigarette companies market menthol cigarettes to African American people of color because African American people of color tend to choose menthol cigarettes. The same formula applies to every other product in the history of ever.

What's with this leftist health kick, anyway? If black people wish to pave their lungs by chain-smoking Newports, that's their prerogative. There's not a single person in the United States who isn't aware of the dangers of puffing on a Marlboro.

Likewise, everyone knows ballooning up to a half-ton is bad for you. Yet, I don't see these same leftists forcing their blue-haired campus potbellies away from the Ben and Jerry's and onto the treadmill. In fact, quite the opposite (read Colorado College Encourages Good Health. Students Protest ‘BODY SHAMING!!!’).

We've seen lots of "ban this" campaigns from the left in the past. But, never one so racially motivated. This attempted ban is oddly specific and built on a stereotype. Some advice for you leftists out there. You should tread more carefully. Your true colors are starting to show.

But remember, it's conservatives who are the racists.
