Democrats Inch Closer to Impeachment Dreams. But What For?
It's November 1, 2019. Do you know what reason Democrats have for impeaching Trump? Neither did I. Don't feel bad, the "Why We're Impeaching Trump Today" is a version of political MadLibs, where intellectual titans like Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi fill in the blanks with whatever news media figureheads like Chris Cuomo and Rachel Maddow have suggested. Maybe it's the reverse of that. Possibly it's both. All I know is, there seems to be a different reason every time impeachment is brought up, or no reason at all.
According to The Hill, Donald Trump has to go -- this time -- due to his July phone call with Ukrainian President Zelensky:
It threatens to deepen the trouble in which he finds himself stemming from a July 25 phone call in which he pressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
Now far be it from me to suggest this is all a mounting pile of bull crap, but I remember reading the transcript of this call (Adam Schiff Reads from Ukraine 'Transcript' Which He Pulled Out of His Ass!) and recall thinking "I don't see why I should care about this."
Here's what Trump asked:
The other thing. There's a lot of talk about Biden's son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great. Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you can look into it... It sounds horrible to me.
Since we're providing context, here's video of Biden bragging:
Okay. So it was less Trump randomly wanting to investigate Joe and Hunter Biden, and more like "here's Joe Biden bragging about intimidating officials, maybe we should investigate."
To me, this doesn't appear as if Trump's phone call falls into the "Treason, Bribery and High Crimes and Misdemeanors" required to impeach.
Granted I'm not so much a political savant, since my milieu is more cultural-centric. But since leftists have called for impeachment since before Donald Trump even took office, I feel comfortable in stating my opinion: the left doesn't care what the reason is, or even if they have a reason, they just want Trump gone.
Take it from Dan Rather:
"Protecting the integrity of 2020" is just code for "elect a Democrat."
The reason to impeach Trump this time seems just as flimsy as whatever the reason was last time. I'm going out on a limb here and will say the next time Democrats try to impeach Trump, the cited reasons will be just as vague.
Bill Clinton was impeached for perjury and obstruction of justice. Kind of down center plate.
I'm not seeing the clear case against Trump. Writing silly tweets and the overuse of the word "very" not withstanding. No, "sometimes he's a dick" also isn't a good reason to oust him. It kind of seems like Democrats and media want Trump impeached because they just don't like him. Stemming from his beating of the Lady With the Cloth or Something. Tell me I'm crazy.
This weekend, conduct an experiment. Ask the liberals in your life cheering for impeachment (especially on social media) why Trump is being impeached and why they, personally, think he should go. My guess is you'll get some fun answers.
