Sanctuary Cities Flipped the Bird to ICE. Now Jeff Sessions is Blocking Their Funds...
Sanctuary cities were free to sanctuary as they please under the Obama assministration. But now, with Trump's in office, our priorities have shifted. We actually want to deport illegal immigrants instead of handing them free goodies. Slight difference. Yet sanctuary cities are still stuck in 2012. Turns out they've been refusing to cooperate with the feds on all things to do with illegal immigrants.
Clearly they're not fans of ICE -- but when it comes to federal funding, they gobble it up. So Jeff Sessions and his DOJ pals have an idea in store. All those monies these sanctuary cities get from the government? Say goodbye to it, maybe.
The Department of Justice announcedsanctuary jurisdictions will lose access to certain federal law enforcement grants in 2017 if they prohibit officials from communicating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, if they block ICE from interviewing jail inmates, or if they fail to notify ICE of the pending release of criminal aliens ICE is seeking to deport.
This isn't the first time Jeff Sessions has threatened to take precious greenery from sanctuary cities. Looks like he's going to be delivering on all those previous warnings.
These particular grants, known as the Byrne Justice Assistance Grants, are the largest source of federal criminal justice funds for state, local, and tribal authorities. It is significant because a large share of the funds awarded in this program go to sanctuary jurisdictions. For example, according to Justice Department records, the four largest grants, and seven out of the top 10 recipients of the Byrne/JAG grants are sanctuaries.Under the new rules announced by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, these four top grant-getters (New York City; Cook County, Illinois; Los Angeles; and Philadelphia) are likely to be disqualified from these grants in the future if they maintain their current policies toward ICE.
Say what you will about Donald Trump, he's definitely keeping his promises on illegal immigration (see “YOU’RE NEXT!” Acting ICE Director Hints ‘Sanctuary’ City Mayors Could be Busted and BOOM: Acting ICE Director Wants Illegals Gone. Now). So far, so good.
These changes come as a breath of fresh air following Obama's immigration crap wagon. Though, as productive as the new policies may be, there's sure to be a few open borders advocates with their panties in a twist right about now.
Speaking of which:
