Last Friday was supposed to be the day they sentenced Donald Trump to prison for a bunch of bookkeeping errors. It got pushed to September thanks to the Supreme Court standing on the right side of history. So there was an assassination attempt on Trump's life on Saturday instead. It has caused a number of changes to the political landscape, least of all to his address on Thursday when he accepts the Republican nomination. Trump announced he rewrote his speech from attacking Joe Biden to instead calling for unity.

And when I say assassination attempt, this is how close it was...

I wanted to take the time to collect my thoughts over the weekend before smashing the keys together about the assassination attempt. Originally, this was going to be about who in the media had the worst take on the shooting. Spoiler: it was CNN.

But things have changed. There was already talk of Trump changing directions with his campaign once the "new information" about Biden being a dementia-ridden old coot whose brain is 69% tapioca pudding "suddenly" came to light. After Saturday, now that even Democrat strategists are saying the election is effectively over, Trump tells Salena Zito it's time for unity.

“The speech I was going to give on Thursday was going to be a humdinger,” he said, “Had this not happened, this would’ve been one of the most incredible speeches” aimed mostly at the policies of President Joe Biden. “Honestly, it’s going to be a whole different speech now.”

Talking as he boarded his plane in Bedminster, New Jersey, for Milwaukee, where the Republican National Convention starts Monday and lasts through Thursday, Trump said his speech will meet the moment that history demands. “It is a chance to bring the country together. I was given that chance.”

If true, and I'll I'm sure there will be a few zingers (I'd be disappointed if not), I think this is the right way to go. My feelings pre-Saturday were that Trump needed to take the prime-time address as an opportunity to speak to the apolitical Americans in the middle who don't care for either candidate. He doesn't need to make the case to his fanbois. And the media will find something to criticize him for no matter what he says. Plus I was still expecting Biden to drop out the morning after.

The failed assassination attempt guarantees that the already sizeable prime-time audience will be at least doubled than what it would have been. This stopped being a candidate's speech on Thursday and has turned into a Presidential Address. It's cliche, but the world will really be watching for a change.

Trump should take the opportunity to unite the country. His running mate (JD Vance?), while still filling the attack dog role, should take the opportunity to unite the country.

Let US be the angry ones. It's a role we're all happy to fill for him! Dare I say, it's one we've perfected over the past four years.
