Eggs have gotten so expensive, Americans are smuggling them across the border like fentanyl
In case you haven't heard, there's a national egg shortage for unspecified reasons other than everything sucks. Eggs in some cities are over $8 a dozen, leaving Americans tragically lacking in omelets.
The real reason eggs are lacking is apparently due to a couple of factors. There was a deadly outbreak of Avian flu in the United States, which killed off a lot of hens. The supply chain still hasn't recovered from that time the U.S. government decided to shut down for a few years over a respiratory illness. And inflation, of course, was already raising prices.
Due to the shortage, egg smuggling across the U.S.-Mexico border has increased by 108% in the past four months. Custom officers have reportedly seen a huge rise in cases of smugglers failing to declare their eggs, only to discover mountainous quantities of eggs upon further inspection.
Failure to declare one's eggs could result in a penalty of up to $10,000 for repeat egg criminals. On the other hand, if you fess up to your crimes and throw yourself at the mercy of U.S. Customs and Border Patrol by declaring your eggs, you won't face any penalty. But your eggs will tragically end up in the incinerator.
So smugglers, please remember to always declare your eggs when entering the country. It'll save everyone a lot of hassle.
\u201cThe San Diego Field Office has recently noticed an increase in the number of eggs intercepted at our ports of entry. As a reminder, uncooked eggs are prohibited entry from Mexico into the U.S. Failure to declare agriculture items can result in penalties of up to $10,000.\u201d— Director of Field Operations Jennifer De La O (@Director of Field Operations Jennifer De La O) 1674005429
While us American plebeians are struggling to find a dozen eggs below $8, eggs in Mexico are reportedly selling for as little as $3 for 30. So please excuse me while I go on a trip to an undisclosed location in the South.
Uncooked eggs aren't allowed across the border due to the risk of disease. As opposed to caravans of random migrants traveling for months from Guatemala. Those guys are in tip-top shape, no threat detected. Those eggs, though. They could end us all.
