Watch: Elon Goes To War With The ADL, But Is He The Real Villain?
The ADL has called out X for allowing the spread of “hate” on its platform. Now Elon Musk has threatened to sue them for billions.
Elon Musk threatened to file a defamation lawsuit against the Anti-Defamation League on Monday for allegedly pressuring X to suspend accounts and causing massive advertising revenue losses.
"Since the acquisition, The @ADL has been trying to kill this platform by falsely accusing it & me of being anti-Semitic," Musk said in an X post. "Our US advertising revenue is still down 60%, primarily due to pressure on advertisers by @ADL (that’s what advertisers tell us), so they almost succeeded in killing X/Twitter!"
The Anti-Defamation League published a report in May that alleges over 5,000 examples from February of "virulent antisemitism from 2,173 accounts" after accounts were reinstated.
"To clear our platform's name on the matter of anti-Semitism, it looks like we have no choice but to file a defamation lawsuit against the Anti-Defamation League … oh the irony!" Musk stated.
On today's show Steven said that when you have companies like the ADL being able to dictate what is permissible and what is not, that is when you have a big tech oligarch in bed with the government.
Although Musk has had a good track record when it comes to free speech, there have been times when his decisions raised red flags.
X has updated its privacy policy and is now planning to collect users' biometric data, job and education history.
Bloomberg reported that the biometrics are for premium users and will give them the option to submit their ID and an image in order to add a “verification layer." Biometric data may be extracted from both the ID and image for matching purposes.
“I do think he [Musk] genuinely champions freedom. I do think he genuinely cares about free speech so I genuinely like him. But that can very easily and most likely change hands at some point. He is probably not going to be the primary owner of [X] in the future. And [now] they have collected your fingerprints, they have collected your education history, your work history,” Steven said.
All it takes is the wrong person to get their hands on the company to be able to exploit that information and date.
Musk has also implied he wants X to be a WeChat for the West.
"We also don’t have a social credit system that resembles an episode of Black Mirror. That's what I don't see enough of from Elon - the challenge of China. I believe that is because it is a huge market for him,” Steven said.
Unlike China, America does not give up its freedoms in the name of security.
“Their government is daddy. They control so many aspects of life. This is the only country left where that isn’t the case.
Freedom is a foundation principle of this country and that is something that people sometimes take for granted.
