So, apparently Elon Musk Is building a 'Utopia' in Texas for all his employees
I feel like this could either turn out amazing, or we could have another Waco situation on our hands. Only time will tell.
Elon Musk apparently wants to build a town in Texas, on farmland outside of Austin. The location is next to future SpaceX and Boring facilities currently under construction. Musk's vision for the city is reportedly a "utopia along the Colorado River, where his employees could live and work," and would have affordable housing at below-market rent.
The area already has some homes, a pool, an outdoor sports area, and a gym. And it's apparently called "Snailbrook," which I find downright adorable. It isn't a reference to a brook of snails, though that would be fitting. It references Boring's mascot - a snail named Gary (yes, after Spongebob).
The mascot is a snail because Elon Musk initially challenged his employees to build machines that move "faster than a snail." Which doesn't sound very impressive. But apparently, that's actually pretty fast for a tunnel drill. According to Musk, a snail moves 14 times faster than a tunnel-digging machine. So, in this case, "faster than a snail" would be lightening speed.
Musk's plans for the town include up to 110 homes and a private compound for himself, and some of the streets have already been given names: Boring Boulevard, Cutterhead Crossing, Waterjet Way, and Porpoise Place. It might even have a small school, and employees may be able to rent 2-3 bedroom homes for $800 a month.
This all sounds like a fun social experiment, but again, I'm a tad wary of commune-style living arrangements. To my knowledge, they have historically ended less than well. And by that I mean the place mysteriously burns to the ground shortly after the FBI's arrival. But maybe this will be different. Elon is a pretty cool guy, after all.
