Gas Shortage causes Germany to darken cities, lower thermostats, and the unthinkable... close breweries
Winter is coming, my sweet summer children, and for much of Europe, that means a cold winter. Humans are pretty adept at adapting to such changes in the weather, and our homes usually stay toasty enough to give us a regular reprieve from the bitter chill nipping at us outside. But as Russia continues to withhold natural gas from Europe--up to an overall 80%, reports Hot Air--some countries are being forced to take somewhat drastic measures.
Germany, for example, in an effort to curb energy consumption and save as much of their natural gas stores as possible for the winter, has begun shutting off lights in public areas and buildings, killing the hot water to public buildings, and even eyeing the forced shutdown of German breweries, which blow through incredible amounts of electricity.
Even then, the city of Hanover is also looking to limit the heating of public buildings to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. I don't know about you, but when it's literally freezing outside, 68 degrees doesn't do much to warm me up. I like it somewhere in the mid-70s range, maybe higher if I'm feelings squirrely.
"Meanwhile, Rosi Steinberger, a member of Bavaria’s regional parliament, now works in a dark office to cut her consumption, and is debating whether to provoke the inevitable ire of Munich by suggesting it cancel its world-famous Oktoberfest. It is scheduled to return this fall after a two-year pandemic pause."
It's not enough that they might shut down the breweries, but they might shut down Oktoberfest, too! This truly is a tragedy!
But this is all the result of Europe's dependence on Russia for natural gas. If, say, they were to be energy independent via, perhaps, nuclear power, this wouldn't be an issue. If America would produce more oil and natural gas, our goofy European friends could just buy it from us. But, you see, European leaders and our own dimwitted corpse currently being propped up in the oval office are morons who are far more concerned with virtue-signaling to radical eco-terrorists and/or bringing about the great transition to renewables that they couldn't care less if a few Germans freeze to death this winter. That's just the cost of progress.
Americans might want to buckle up because this is the direction in which the left is taking us.
