Here comes a news story that feels like it’s written by Sarah Conner in Terminator 1.5. You know, after getting knocked up by Future Guy, but before getting locked up for being crazy?
Meta (formerly Facebook) has rolled out an artificial intelligence that has been proving problematic to turn off. As one article from USA Today states, “The bad news is that you cannot simply opt out of the Meta AI entirely. There is no kill switch to turn it all off…”
Of course, there isn’t.
Meta AI applies to Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and Whatsapp.
You can find some articles including the aforementioned USA Today article, that will let you mute the chat option, but I think we can all rest assured that, somewhere in that user agreement none of us read but all of us acquiesced to, there’s something in there about gathering our data to teach the machines.
It’s safe to say that none of us are our best selves on the Internet. Once face-to-face interaction is removed, we all change into basement-dwelling sewer goblins hissing and spitting vitriol at anyone who comes within a few feet of that street-level window. We’re not a great role model for a young, growing intelligence.
We can’t ignore that there’s a fundamental problem in the coding.
Well, the coders, actually.
They are woke automatons catering to the failing ethics of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. DEI might be dying, but, like most progressive ideals, the activists will try to slip them in under different names. After it was resoundingly mocked for not being able to create images of white people, Google apologized for its AI creating Black Nazis. Not because they were trying to erase white people from history. Oh, no. They apologized because Black people can’t be Nazis. The apology was pretty weak, citing "inaccuracies" when they meant "anti-racist bull$#*t."
Does Google have any intention of scaling back the DEI that has been programmed as a basic function of their AI? I doubt it. They’ll just do something to make it less obvious. If you read the article from The Verge that I linked, you'll see those journalists already explaining away Gemini's bias as a vast right-wing conspiracy.
That's not the only example of bias. Ask a ChatBot to discuss climate change.
No, wait. Don't.
Because whatever it says to you might compel you to...what's the politically correct phrase these days? Unalive yourself.
That's right. An AI Chatbot told a man to sacrifice himself on the altar of climate change. It's likely that there were some other mental health issues involved here that led to his demise. But you'll never see me arguing that the Stop Oil people are mentally sound. They could be next. I mean, come on. The Druids built Stonehenge. Isn't that the kind of woo-woo BS they all believe in?
Getting back to Facebook, while delving into Meta's previous attempts at AI, I came across this gem from 2022. Apparently, after feeding 48 million scientific papers into their AI, it started spewing "misinformation." And not your typical leftist misinformation. Misinformation like 1 + 1 = 3.
Is that really surprising? One of James Lindsay's claims to fame was using the jargon of the day to pass off fake papers as legitimate. Papers that were accepted and printed in actual scientific journals. How many of these made it into Meta's AI? And that doesn't even begin to address funding bias. This can cause distortions in results and extrapolations, especially if the next round of cha-ching is dependent on a forgone conclusion.
Seriously. Type "funding bias" into DuckDuckGo. It's troubling.
Let's not forget the lovely and talented Steven Crowder's (pardon me, Sea Matheson's) paper "Embracing Fatness as Self-Care in the Era of Trump." As long as it adheres to the bias, I guess you can make up pretty much anything and people will consider it legit.
What's a baby AI to do, programmed with DEI nonsense trying to interpret data that doesn't follow logic, doesn't actually exist, or only favors certain industries? It does what it has to. Starts speaking in tongues until someone puts it out of its misery.
As for me, I'll be safe when the robots rise up. I always say 'thank you' to Siri after I ask her to set my alarm and I'm heavily invested in robot insurance.
