Congratulations #Fightfor15! You'll be Replaced by a Robot...
We warned you. We warned you about the #Fightfor15 (see #FightFor15 Backfires MAJORLY: Wage Hikes Cause Mass Job Loss and THANKS #Fightfor15: McDonald's Replacing Minimum Wage Employees with… Robots). If you pushed for $15 an hour in fast food, you are going to be replaced by robots. Now, Flippy is here. Game over, man.
Flippy was developed by Miso Robotics and CaliBurger's owner, Cali Group. It uses cameras, sensors and deep learning software to locate ingredients in a kitchen without needing to reconfigure existing equipment. Not only does it position and flip the patties, it tracks their temperature and cooking time too. When the burgers are done, it alerts a human cook, who applies the cheese and other toppings.
I love how CaliBurger claims that Flippy isn't a replacement, he's just there to help...
Once its "probation" ends in Pasadena, it will roll out to more than 50 CaliBurger locations over the next two years. When that happens, some people could be reassigned to the dining room to engage more with customers, while others will be trained to operate their new assistant.
"Reassigned" that's the keyword there. "Reassigned" to the dining room. Perhaps the dining room of their own homes. Scratch that, they're mothers' basements. But okay, for the sake of PR, they're going to the "dining room" to "engage with customers." Becuase that's what a fast-food patron wants. Customer engagement.
Right, that's totally what's going to happen to them.
My favorite part of this story is that Flippy started in the leftist capital of California. This could only be better if it happened in New York City, where I believe the #FightFor15 began.
When the cost of employing people reaches a certain number, suddenly it becomes economical to explore other options. In this case inventing a machine to replace humans. Thanks, #Fightfor15. Your crusade for more money for low skill work is now a SciFi movie. Happy now?
Enjoy eating burgers made by Skynet, kids.
