A squatter who had been wreaking havoc in a California neighborhood for weeks assaulted the mailman in an unprovoked attack.
The mail carrier, Bruce Jennings, has worked for the USPS for 20 years. His attacker has a criminal history longer than not. Why he was out of jail is unclear other than the fact that this is California and they don’t like to punish criminals there. But on top of that, he was a squatter. Meaning he took over someone's property and refused to leave. And because he de facto trespassed, he had “rights” to the property.
The attacker has also been convicted of burglary and assault with a deadly weapon. And with a decades-long criminal record you would assume officials would know this man was dangerous, but accusing criminals who commit violent acts of being anything but an upstanding citizen in California is a big nope.
A mail carrier in Gardena was assaulted in a seemingly unprovoked attack caught on video.
Bruce Jennings, who has worked 20-plus years for the U.S. Postal Service, was assaulted Feb. 21 by a man with a decades-long criminal history that includes assault with a deadly weapon and burglary.
Jennings said the man was upset that he didn't have a package for him, and that he was asking for it to be delivered to a vacant home where he was allegedly squatting.
Surveillance video shows the suspect exchange words with Jennings and gesture as if he was going to punch him.
That is when Jennings was punched from behind.
Not only is this man a psycho who randomly assaults people, but he does it most pathetically.
"I'm dropping the mail, and at that point it was defense mode for me," Jennings told Eyewitness News.
"Prior to that, as I was approaching him, he is telling me he could do me foul. I don't know what that means," Jennings said.
"The entire community knows about this guy, knows him by his first and last name: John Ross," neighbor Garrett Rodriguez.
The suspect was arrested last week for breaking into another home and is still in custody. Neighbors want to keep it that way. They don't feel safe with the thought of him coming back, and they hate thinking about what happened to Jennings.
This is what happens when you have a DA focused on criminal justice. Because criminal justice means "justice" for the criminal, not the general public.
That said, don’t mess with the mailman. Every single mail carrier I have met has been very sweet and welcoming. Those workers are part of the community and no one is here for this.
"He's the first one that greets you when you move here," neighbor Derek Martin said. "We all came together because Bruce is someone who goes above and beyond the call of duty with his job. He's just a guy you hate to see this happen to."
The suspect was already disrupting the peace in the neighborhood and residing in a residence he had no business being in. But officials don’t care because trespassing gives criminals private property rights in California.
At one point in time, the mailman’s biggest fear was dog attacks. Now it’s squatter attacks.
That said, if the attacker is back out on the street and the charges are dismissed or reduced, even though he attacked a federal employee on video, don’t be surprised. Because unfortunately, that is the status quo in California.
