Why Gina Carano's Lawsuit Against Disney is Bigger Than Just Star Wars
Gina Carano scored a huge win in her lawsuit against the Walt Disney Company last week when her discovery motion was granted. Disney must now hand over documents pertaining to actors like Pedro Pascal and others across various Star Wars projects as broken by Gene Schaerr on X. This will include compensation data, which is going to show that Disney paid some people more than others, likely leading to bad things for The Walt Disney Company.
Reminder: Gina Carano was cast as the character Cara Dune on the show The Mandalorian. Her character was massively successful and received well by audiences. After putting her pronouns in her (then) Twitter bio as boop/bop/beep and posting a (since deleted) Instagram story in which she drew a parallel between draconian Covid enforcement and the Nazis, Carano was fired from all Disney projects. It’s not for me to say that she was right but…maybe she had a point. She is now suing Disney over their cancellation of her.
Disney’s motion to dismiss this case has already been denied.
The lawsuit has already produced over 10,000 pages in documents. That’s a lot of pages. And a lot of billable hours.
If Gina Carano refuses to settle and takes Disney to trial, even if she loses at trial,, Disney will never recover from the information that will be made public as a result of the discovery process.
Since my superpower is, apparently, that I can read, I dug into some of the things that Carano is requesting and why this might force Disney to change their trajectory.
It looks like The Walt Disney Company tried to put Gina through a struggle session with LGBTQ identified employees and special interest group GLAAD. GLAAD is a non-profit organization that “creates national and local programs that advance LGBTQ acceptance.”
Carano’s lawyers also want to know if Disney reached out to social media platforms or employees of those platforms. In the wake of the Twitter Files, it’s hard to believe that this was for innocent reasons. It’s also possible that this is a big nothing and Disney had no influence over social media platform publishers. I guess we’ll find out when this goes to trial.
It’s also possible that Disney tried to influence individual podcasters and personalities in the wake of Gina Carano’s cancellation. Disney is a big company with a lot of money. Why wouldn’t they try to manipulate the narrative? Again, the real risk here is Disney being exposed as a biased organization. It can only make Disney look bad. It probably won’t make these commenters look good, either, if they pushed a narrative for a paycheck.
It seems that one of the big hurdles that Disney will have a hard time clearing is that actors employed before and since the firing of Gina Carano have said things that were just as inflammatory or even more so. But those accounts are owned by people who support the Leftist agenda, so they were not discriminated against like Carano was.
In fact, Mark Hamill’s Bluesky account is almost just anti-Trump/anti-Teslas/hashtagResist at this point. Pedro Pascal compared Trump supporters to Nazis after Gina Carano was fired. To this date, he is still employed by Disney. He was cast as the lead of Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Amandla Stenberg said “something something toxic fandom” and subjected us to whatever this bit of awful is:
The Acolyte was cancelled. Was it because of this? You would think that Disney wouldn’t want their lead star attacking fans, but The Acolyte didn’t have any fans, so I’m not sure who this was targeting. Either way, no struggle sessions. In fact, in regards the cancellation, Alan Bergman, Disney Entertainment co-chairman said, “..we were happy with our performance, but it wasn’t where we needed it to be given the cost structure of that title, quite frankly, to go and make a season two.” Almost as though the cancellation was due to the budget, not the poor reception and the behavior of its actors.
Amandla Stenberg’s post has not been deleted as of today.
James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequels, was fired for offensive tweets. Then rehired.
And let’s not get into Rachel Zegler and the fiasco that was Snow White.
Disney has a double standard. That double standard is discriminatory against conservatives.
There’s also something that’s been redacted from these court documents and I would absolutely love to know what it is.
I hope Gina Carano is in for this fight. I hope she realizes that even if she loses, the rest of us will win. Gina Carano’s battle may be the thing to forces Disney to pull out of its self-destruct spiral by exposing the rot within its twisted heart.
Walt Disney was a visionary. He wasn’t in it for the money. He wasn’t interested in compromising on the quality of his films. Animators wanted to work for him because they respected his artistic vision. He wanted to create a theme park for everyone. It was revolutionary. It was innovative. It didn’t cost $10,000 for a family of four. (That’s just in the middle; it can cost upwards of $15,000 or more for a one-week visit.)
You sold your soul, Disney. You are the villain. You are the poison apple. Your facade is about to be exposed and I hope that means we can get back a modicum of Walt’s vision. And I wish Gina all the luck in this fight. It might be the biggest one she’s ever had.
