Jamie Foxx's new movie in limbo over woke audiences and Robert Downey Jr playing a Mexican
Jamie Foxx's movie All-Star Weekend is being held up for release. It's a comedy about two friends trying to make it to the NBA All-Star game with an all-star cast. The reason why it's being held up is because one member of that all-star cast, Robert Downey Jr, plays a Mexican, and people are worried about how woke idiots will respond. Jamie Foxx also plays a racist white cop (which I think sounds hysterical), but I'm guessing there isn't much concern over backlash there.
Why, yes, Robert Downey Jr. did play a white guy who acted like a black dude in Tropic Thunder. Everyone thought it was hysterical in 2008. Then around 2020 or so, people started saying it was raaaaaacist, and now, RDJ keeps getting asked if he feels bad about it.
Foxx told Cinemablend about the hold-up, "It’s been tough, with the lay of the land when it comes to comedy. We’re trying to break open those sensitive corners where people go back to laughing again." Even though, when people saw the film (aka real people as opposed to critics, woke bloggers, and random idiots on Twitter), "the one thing we kept hearing in the screenings was how much people were laughing."
Which, if I were Jamie Foxx, I would have two words for the haters:
This should be Jamie Foxx’s only response to Hollywood holding up the release of “All Star Weekend.” Two words… pic.twitter.com/LUyPbKNLSl

The movie was filmed back in 2017, and Foxx had first discussed it with Joe Rogan. There was starting to be concern back then over what jokes you were "allowed" to say. Foxx said, "I try to tell people, we never mean anything bad. We poke fun, but we don't mean anything bad. You can't kill us. I've gotta keep doing what I do. It's getting tougher."
It was getting tougher in 2017. In 2022, Dave Chappelle gets a show at Prince's old club canceled over tens of protesters.
I hope the movie comes out and comes out soon. The outrage over it is good for those of us in content-hustling business. But also, more importantly, it sounds like it could be really funny. And I can't think of the last laugh out loud funny comedy I've seen.
