So-called "academics" are attacking Jason Aldean's "Small Town," claim it's a dog whistle to Trump Country
Jason Aldean's "Try That in A Small Down" and the controversy surrounding it has reached such an absurd level that alleged academics are analyzing it. Or, to be more precise, journalismers want to create "this is racist" content and find a professor to interview so they can claim, "Experts say, this is racist."
Hollywood Reporter, we're looking at you.
This shows a laughable misunderstanding of country music. Another way to word this headline is "Country singer sings song that appeals to country music fans." Also, Aldean didn't build anything. He didn't write the song or direct the video.
It's not a knock on him or a Jason Isbell thing. It's how Nashville works. Some artists write their own songs. Other artists team with the city's wealth of songwriters. Aldean "cynically built" the song by listening to a demo and saying, "Hey, this song slaps. I want to record it."
THR's excuse for creating this content stems from two professors. Hunter College music theory professor Philip Ewell, claims the "anti-blackness" of the song while subtle, is unmistakable. Belmont University professor Don Cusic claims it used "coded language" and "coded pictures." The fact that there were plenty of white people in the riot footage as well? Meh. The producers KNEW what they were doing anyway. "People who are Trump supporters are looking at it a lot differently than intelligentsia."
My favorite is when they analyze the line about pulling a gun on the liquor store owner: "Someone’s robbing a liquor store — in the American psyche, the person who’s doing that without saying it is a Black person, right? It’s just in our minds. The owner of a liquor store is probably Asian or maybe white."
If whenever you hear of a liquor store being robbed you think of a black person, that's on you. But this is Joe Biden's America. People of all races are robbing these days. Even the whites.
Leftists want to create evil motives for why the songwriters -- Kelley Lovelace, Neil Thrasher, Tully Kennedy, and Kurt Allison -- wrote the song. In reality, this is most likely how the song came about:
Kelley Lovelace: What do you guys want to write about today?
Neil Thrasher: How about how terrible cities are and how in small towns, we look out for each other?
Tully Kennedy: Great. I have a guitar lick I've been working on. Anyone want a Bud Light?
Kurt Allison: LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL! No.
And yet the alleged "intelligentsia" wonders why people out in Normie America don't listen to them.
