In 2015 the Hearing Protection Act, which would deregulate suppressors and remove a $200 per unit ATF tax, was introduced into the House.

Not surprisingly, gun control zealots are opposed to the bill for all the wrong reasons. On Tuesday, New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand falsely claimed witnesses can't hear gun shots that come from suppressed firearms and argued deregulating this piece of hardware would make it more difficult for law enforcement to solve crimes.

These claims are of course totally false. Suppressors, also known as "silencers," don't completely eliminate the sound of a gun shot. Instead, suppressors bring down the sound to levels that don't damage hearing. They also limit recoil. There is nothing quiet about a suppressor, they simply make a gun less loud.

Gillibrand was quickly confronted by the bill's original sponsor Congressman Jeff Duncan about her statements, who invited her to educate herself at the range.

This goes to show leftists' knowledge about guns come from action movies. And their own imagination. There's no other place where a silencer is silent except for action movies. Ms. Gillibrand might also think shooting a gun (silencer or not) at the gas tank of a car will make it explode. Or that all bombs are equipped with handy digital timers telling you how long before they go off. Which is lucky, considering the bomb-defuser person, who's usually on standby, can tell everyone who's not a bomb-defuser to chill the eff out, he's got this. Though it typically takes him all but the last three seconds to get it done.

Nothing, other than sorcery, is going to take that noise from deafeningly loud to a whisper. But, as is typical with leftists like Kirsten Gillibrand, they don't bother with trivial things like facts. As an aside, a silencer would come in handy in the case of self-defense. Like, you're grabbing your gun in the middle of the night to shoot an intruder, but can't find your ear protection. That's why you might want a silencer. Because guns are loud.
