"Failure of all of humanity": White teen sticking up for smaller friend beaten to death by up to 15 black youths
A white teen has died days after he was found severely beaten by up to fifteen black youths near a Las Vegas High School. Video of the attack was captured by bystanders and has gone viral on social media.
Jonathan Lewis Jr. died while being treated at University Medical Center for injuries he suffered from the beatdown. His father Jonathan Lewis Sr., tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal his son was sticking up for one of his smaller friends. According to Lewis Jr.'s girlfriend, he was attempting to get back his smaller friend's stolen property after that smaller friend was thrown in a trash can.
“A couple (of people) attacked him, and they weren’t able to hurt him enough, and they all attacked him at once ... [My son] was a loving, giving, kind, fierce young man who loved community and caring for others.”
WARNING: Graphic video
Lewis Sr. told a local news outlet: “I think there’s just a failure of all of humanity to recognize that we need to be teaching our youth how to coexist."
He told a separate outlet that the cowardly violence was pathetic.
"A true warrior would never cowardly beat one person just because the two or three members of the group couldn’t beat the one warrior, a true warrior would let the others learn and grow."
As of now, no suspects have been arrested, but an investigation is ongoing. Investigators plan to charge the youths involved in Lewis Jr.'s death with murder. There are calls on social media to also charge the youths involved in his death with a hate crime as well.
In a GoFundMe page set up to help with funeral costs, Jonathan Lewis Jr. was described as a "kind, loving, gentle young man who has the heart of a champion and the brightest loving energy that attracts people to him with love."
