Watch: Don't act surprised, but ESPN honored biological male Lia Thomas for Women's History Month
It's Women's History Month, everyone! And to celebrate, ESPN of course had to honor the most beautiful and most brave "woman" of modern history - Lia Thomas.
That's right, to celebrate strong women worldwide, ESPN featured Thomas in a segment yesterday celebrating women's achievements. It begins by explaining, "In 2022, Lia Thomas became the first transgender athlete to win an NCAA Division I championship by winning the 500 freestyle. The Texas native competed for three seasons on the men's swim team at the University of Pennsylvania. She began her transition after her sophomore season."
Later in the segment, Thomas says, "Being trans is not a choice. I didn't have any other choice because not transitioning was not leading me anywhere." It especially wasn't leading Thomas to a gold model. What, who said that?
"People will say, ‘Oh, she just transitioned so she would have an advantage so she could win.’ I transitioned to be happy,"
Lia Thomas fully went through male puberty before beginning hormone replacement therapy in 2019. Thomas has not had "bottom" mutila-- I mean, "gender affirming surgery," and is apparently still attracted to women.
Former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines, who had to compete against and share a locker room with Thomas last year, has been quite outspoken about Thomas in the past. Specifically about seeing their male genitalia in her locker room. Gaines spoke out about this particular segment, tweeting, "Lia Thomas is not a brave, courageous woman who EARNED a national title. He is an arrogant, cheat who STOLE a national title from a hardworking, deserving woman. The @ncaa is responsible. If I was a woman working at ESPN, I would walk out. You're spineless @espn"
But remember ladies, biological males winning our awards and taking our places on podiums, in commercials, and even beauty pageants is actually female empowerment. At least in 2023.
