Let's get this out of the way: Lizzo is gross. From what I can gather, she contains no redeemable qualities--though, there are plenty of empty calories saturating those insides. Her music is vapid, grating, and annoying. Her performances are reminiscent of those cartoon hippos squeezed into leotards that once populated television screens on rare occasions during Saturday morning cartoons. And her artwork, well, suffice it to say it leaves much to be desired. But none of this matters in this instance.

No, in this particular moment, Lizzo is actually a victim of the left, the very same left who idolizes her, and the exact same left she participates in to push her revolting body positivity propaganda and other assorted inanities. That left came for her this time, and like so many before her, she bent the knee and capitulated. What was her grave sin? She used a bad word.

Yes, like many celebrities before her, Lizzo fell victim to the leftist attack on language, which says that words that make even one person feel icky or experience hurt feelings should be completely erased from the common lexicon and the user made to perform penance for their unholy crimes. Lizzo used the word "spaz."

For most people, the word spaz means little more than a playful insult one might use to describe a hyperactive sibling or that one niece who cannot stop bouncing off the walls, but for members of the "disabled community" (and I use scare-quotes because the idea that there is a group of people intrinsically connected by dint of their having any one of innumerable physical limitation is moronic) this phrase is derogatory.

Apparently, certain activists who have nothing better to do than find reasons to be even more upset--as if suffering from a medical condition wasn't enough to throw a perpetual pity party--link the phrase to cerebral palsy and say the word "spaz" was adopted and bastardized to insult people who suffer from the condition.

If the phrase was originally derived from the condition, it certainly isn't linked to it in the greater social imagination. The word has--how does the left like to describe it--evolved. It means something different. But the left won't accept such an answer, so when Lizzo used the word in one of her vapid and annoying songs, they came for her and demanded she change her lyrics or face the wrathful tweets of disabled people everywhere (or at least those interested in being stupid and have Twitter accounts).

Lizzo did as she was told and even issued the obligatory apology to all those she "hurt" with the use of the word spaz.

I wouldn't have apologized, and Lizzo shouldn't have, either. She did, though. And good riddance. Live by the woke, die by the woke. And though Lizzo isn't at risk of starving anytime soon, a few more missteps like this one and she may find herself completely canceled and wondering how she's going to pay the bills and stuff her face.
