Donna Hansbrough was assaulted by three thugs while working at Lowes. She was also fired by Lowes. Donna was hanging on to the other end of the shopping cart full of merchandise the thugs were trying to steal, so they punched her in the face. Repeatedly. Lowes fired her over their "zero tolerance" policy because, like what feels like most corporate chains in this country, they care more about criminals than they do people.

Donna was in tears when she talked to the press. She loved her job, her customers, and the people she worked with. Lowes, a publicly-traded company where The Vanguard Group is the majority shareholder, doesn't care. Side note: The second-largest shareholder is BlackRock

Donna was punched three times in the face, causing her right eye to swell and blacken. Police confirmed she did not make any physical contact with the three thugs. Yet still: "Lowes stated that Donna's actions (grabbing the cart) was a violation of their policy and Donna was terminated as a result."

Donna had been an employee there for thirteen years.

Yet another example of why, while I understand the instinct to get involved, it's a corporate chain and is simply not worth it. If you are defending a small, independently owned business, that's one thing and encouraged. But time and again, these companies have made it clear they don't care about you. Start caring less about them.
