Mass Sword-Killing in Liberal Utopia Sweden. Sword-Control?
Where there's a will, there's a way, and if someone can't easily get to a gun, they look to a closer form of violence, in this case a sword and a knife. This isn't Midieval Times we're talking about (though their turkey legs are delicious), but a crazed Nazi sympathizer in Sweden who killed several and injured many more by running them through with a sword. We're not making this up, we couldn't if we tried. From The Guardian:
“He was dressed in a way that suggested a racist background [and] video at the scene showed he acted in a military fashion. His actions and the way he looked draws the mind to the Nazis,” Hallgren told journalists.
Officers had no option but to use deadly force to stop the attacker, he said. “If we had taken longer to respond, definitely there would have been more victims.”Hallgren added that police in the city had been trained to respond to similar situations following school attacks in the US and neighbouring Finland.
“We are certain that Sweden is part of the global system, and when we see such awful crimes in schools in other countries, we are not any different and we have to be prepared,” Hallgren said.
There's a lot to unsheathe here (sorry not sorry), so let's address the first thing first. The attacker, who hasn't technically been identified, yet kind of has by the media (I'm scratching my head on that one too) was just a bit racist. And when I say "a bit" I mean a lot. Code words. He was a 21 year old who sympathized with the Nazis and resented the immigration boom in Sweden. The article from The Guardian uses a "rightwing" drinking game, and tries using the phrase like a curse word in a Tarantino movie. Edgy. Even though the Nazis were national socialists... But whatevs.
Secondly, and this needs to be addressed, the attacker didn't use a gun. Not an AR15, not a handgun. No gun. Instead he wielded a sword to execute his plan and the victims. It's doubtful there will be calls for sword-control. It's doubtful there will be a media attack on "sword culture." Do not plan on seeing celebrity filled PSAs about standing up to sword violence. The Lord of the Rings movies will not be blamed for this tragedy.
Meaning weapons are weapons, and regardless if they're used by pulling a trigger or thrusted into an abdomen, the problem isn't the inanimate object, the problem is the person holding it and using it in a deadly fashion. The problem is always and will always be the criminal. Because criminals are dicks.
Thirdly, Sweden is the liberal utopia people like Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton want the USA to emulate. When those two old fogies wake up and look in the mirror, they ask "Mirror, Mirror on the wall, what's the greatest socialist country of them all?" And the dark voice answers "SWEDEN." Wide open immigration policies, welfare programs spilling from the draining government coffers, and no guns allowed (except by police, who, as you may have noticed, killed the attacker before the attacker could slay more students), Sweden is exactly the sort of place which gives Bernie and Hillary the warm fuzzies. Not just because of the policies mentioned, but mostly for the crippling control the government has over its people.
And when the government can change the demographics of its country by opening its doors to anyone and everyone, when the government can give unto these people the money earned by its citizenry, when it plays identity politics like The Guardian plays the "rightwing" drinking game and openly favors certain races of people (in this case, Middle Eastern immigrants), every so often an unwell, sensitive and mentally unbalanced guy with a sword snaps. Am I condoning his actions? Of course not. But he reached a tipping point, and his motive wasn't the sword, his motive was anger.
How often are "white men" vilified in our "first world" countries? Hint: all the time. White privilege, white male privilege, male privilege, the patriarchy. Contrast that with the "Religion of peace" known as Islam. Which will blow you up if you draw a cartoon of their prophet.
Again, not condoning the swordsman. But if we want to stop acts of violence like this, we need to respect all life at all stages. Including unborn children and *gasp* yes, white males.
Also, swords don't kill people. People kill people.
