Memphis Mayor to gangs: Please stop stealing cars, killing each other for seven days

Memphis has reached a 17-year high with violent crime rates. And in 2022, it was considered the most dangerous city in the country by some measurements. Nearly 400 people fell victim to homicide, which is an insane jump from the less than 200 victims just several years ago.
In other words, there is a crime problem in Memphis. And because Democrats have their unique way of dealing with lawlessness, which is not dealing with crime, Memphis Mayor Paul Young has done just that.
Young did not meet with some of the “highest-ranking” law enforcement officials. He did not meet with the “highest-ranking” prosecutors. And he did not meet with law-abiding citizens. Rather than do what any idiot would do, he decided the best way to tackle crime was to beg gang members to stop committing said crimes. But not just any gang members, he met with the city’s “highest-ranking” gang members.
Gang members get bored just like everyone else in the world. However, the way they pass the time is unlike most people reading this. To pass their spare time, these thugs commit grand theft auto, according to Young.
Or in other words, just another Tuesday.
In an effort to curb criminality, Memphis Mayor Paul Young, who took office in January with a focus on public safety, recently met with some of the city’s highest-ranking gang leaders in Memphis and crafted a ceasefire between the groups for seven days.
“My ask for them in that conversation was, ‘Can we get a seven-day ceasefire? Just seven days where there’s no shooting, no killing?’” the mayor said during a youth development panel discussion, CNN affiliate WMC-TV reported. “And they said, ‘Yeah, we would be willing to do that,’ and they gave me a couple of caveats.”
Some of the requested terms included assurances their rival gangs would agree to the ceasefire, as well as help getting well-paying jobs and the training needed to access them, WMC-TV reported.
Let’s get this straight. The mayor of one of America’s major cities met with a bunch of gang members. And those gang members not only assured the mayor that their crew, but also their rival crews, would agree to a “seven-day ceasefire” as long as the thugs got “well-paying” jobs.
Rather than focusing on a sustainable and long-term solution, the mayor has decided to negotiate with criminals who commit crimes to award them for not committing crimes for one whole week.
As of writing this, that week is officially up. Which means the cease-fire is over. And that my friends, is the best the Mayor of Memphis could do.
How pathetic.
Young told CNN Saturday that what he described as an endemic issue of car break-ins in Memphis has stemmed in part from a lack of job opportunities for gang members. Those break-ins are part of more than 3,500 major property crimes reported in January, according to the Memphis Police Department.
“What they said was … ‘Our young guys just need something to do; they steal cars because it’s fun, because there’s a lack of activities in their communities,’” Young said. “They need ways to earn income.”
I highly doubt adding more basketball courts would do anything to curb the endemic of auto theft but I guess it doesn't hurt to try to focus on the “lack of activities in their communities.”
I don’t live in Memphis. But I would not be happy if my mayor started begging thugs and gang leaders to stop committing crimes.
Begging gangs to stop killing people is typically only something you see in third-world countries - not the richest country in the world.
Maybe instead of negotiating with thugs, city officials can start throwing them in jail. Because I hear that once you start holding people accountable for their actions - they are less likely to commit crimes. But that is just a thought. Negotiating a ceasefire with rival gangs is likely more effective, right?
