Pro-lockdown, pro-mask Democrat on Monkeypox response: People will make their own decisions about risk levels
Close your eyes. Think about the past two years plus fifteen days to flatten the curve. Also, think about all the handwringing by the left and the media (but I repeat myself) about why Americans don't trust public health officials and the media as institutions. Now, open your eyes and read the headline of this Washington Post article, As monkeypox strikes gay men, officials debate warnings to limit partners. There is a quote by California State Senator Scott Weiner that stands out.
Yes, the same Sen. Weiner who fought to make it no longer a felony to knowingly give someone HIV during sex. WaPo discussed a recent BDSM festival in San Franciso that went on, even though, in California, 91.7% of monkeypox cases in the state are in “[g]ay, lesbian, or same gender loving people,” and men make up over 98% of cases. Here's what Sen. Weiner had to say about the response:
“If people want to have sex, they are going to have sex. I know people who normally go to sex parties who will not. People will make their own decisions about their own risk levels.”
Yes, this Sen. Weiner:
We need a national mask mandate. Period. That’s how we beat this virus.
— Senator Scott Wiener (@Scott_Wiener) October 24, 2020
This guy, too:
Anti-vaccine activists 🤝 anti-#StayHome activists
Selfishness, hostility to science & healthcare workers, “pro-choice” - i.e., choosing to get other people infected with a deadly disease#COVID19
— Senator Scott Wiener (@Scott_Wiener) April 20, 2020
That guy says it's unreasonable to tell gay men we're hashtag #allinthistogether and they should stop being selfish by having unprotected sex orgies. Instead, he says, it's up to people to make decisions about their own risk levels. I'd tell him to eat a bag of Weiner's, but I wouldn't want him to catch Monkeypox. Or [solve for x]pox.
It's not just him. Pay attention to how the left and media (but I repeat myself) change their tune. YOU were selfish for wanting your kids to go to school. YOU were selfish for wanting to see dying loved ones or attend funerals after loved ones were forced to die alone. YOU were selfish for not wanting to wear a mask. It was totally reasonable to tell YOU to change YOUR life. But when it's one of the left's preferred marginalized groups, asking to curb one's urge to have sex with a bunch of different people is too much of an ask.
It's the fault of Fox News or your MAGA uncle's Facebook memes why people don't trust officials. Those same officials (and their fluffers in the media) earned that distrust all on their own.
