Billboard Awards Producer P. Diddy Defends Morgan Wallen Over N-Word Controversy: 'Canceling Needs to Stop'
If anyone was hoping to "cancel" Morgan Wallen from performing at the 2022 Billboard awards, take it up with executive producer P. Diddy. Diddy (aka Sean Combs ) said not only is Wallen performing, but this canceling nonsense has to stop. The awards are set to be Wallen's first televised performance since 2021's n-word (soft "g") controversy.
To recap, Wallen was caught on video drunk and using the n-word with friends. It was at a moment when he lost his battle with alcoholism, the video was at the end of a three-day bender. He owned up to it and apologized. He's been persona non-grata in the industry. But country music fans bought over three million copies of his album Dangerous.
After some drama, it was confirmed Wallen will be performing at the awards. Diddy said, "As a musical family, none of us are saints; none of us are without things that happen to them in life. So one of the things I’m doing directly is un-canceling the canceled. That’s breaking news because people haven’t been about uncanceling. But canceling is a trend that needs to stop.”
The mogul then addressed the Wallen issue directly, adding "Morgan [used the N-word] while talking to his boy. People make mistakes. Now we’re moving on with love and respect for everybody that was hurt or affected. It’s time to forgive."
Apropos of nothing, and much like when I write about Russel Brand, this is an excuse to plug the movie Get Him to the Greek, one of my all-time favorites. Diddy was the best part about it.

More importantly, we're seeing even people on the left are pushing back over leftist cancel culture. True, in this case, we're using the word "canceled" in the broadest sense. Wallen went on to sell three million albums and is headlining stadiums this summer. But it's more about the "culture" than the "cancel." The culture of the ultra-woke progressives who make it their lives' work to scour the internet looking for anyone who said a bad thing ever and attempting to have that person's livelihood destroyed.
Diddy and I vote for different people. Politically, he is more in line with those who wanted Wallen canceled. But Diddy also knows Wallen could have easily been him if a video joking around with friends wound up on TMZ. People do and say dumb things. We all deserve second chances. Diddy gets it. Wallen gets it. The people who are most likely on Twitter right now calling Diddy a sell-out are the ones who don't.
