The Muslim Countries Trump Wants to 'Ban'? They Were Obama's Idea
Good morning, Crowderheads. You're probably waking up wondering what the deal is with President Trump's latest executive order. You know, that really, super mean one "banning" migrants from Muslim Countries? Of course, with today's press it's hard to delineate between truth vs. fiction. Fake news, am I right? Still, this seems to be a PR disaster for the Administration. One question that keeps being asked however, why did Trump choose to ban a bunch of Muslim countries that never attacked America? How did the President decide?
The answer might surprise you. President Trump is cribbing off of ex-President Obama's notes. From the ultra-right wing... wait, Mic.com?
How, though, did the Trump administration choose these seven Muslim-majority countries? The truth is it didn't: The countries were chosen during Barack Obama's presidency.According to the draft copy of Trump's executive order, the countries whose citizens are barred entirely from entering the United States is based on a bill that Obama signed into law in December 2015.
Obama signed the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act as part of an omnibus spending bill. The legislation restricted access to the Visa Waiver Program, which allows citizens from 38 countries who are visiting the United States for less than 90 days to enter without a visa.
So...wait. Trump signed an executive order enforcing an Obama policy?
On a side note, to people crying, "but...these refugees never did anything to us!!!" See, there's a reason that the overwhelming majority of Germans and the UK even support full burka bans. There's a reason that Western Europe has been crying out with warnings to the United States. They understand that they very well may never restore their country to the law and order society they once loved.
It's just surprising that Obama was the one to hear them. But due to political expediency at home, he never followed through with the policy that he knew would protect Americans.
Is President Trump just supposed to wait?
