This is what we call a “first-world issue.”
Vanderbilt University professor Michael Eric Dyson had a major meltdown on CNN because Rep. Nancy Mace dared to use Kamala Harris’ name in vain.
NEW: CNN panel has meltdown after Rep. Nancy Mace apparently says Kamala Harris’ name wrong.
“When you disrespect Kamala Harris by saying you will call her whatever you want… that's the history and legacy of white disregard for the humanity of black people…”
Mace: “And KamAla… pic.twitter.com/LWl2dygFQX

“That’s the history and legacy of white disregard for the humanity of Black people!”
Actually, it’s not.
According to the New Republic:
“Kamala’s, Ka-mala’s, uh—” Mace stumbled.
“You had it right, you almost got it!” chided a smiling Keith Boykin, former Clinton White House aide.
Mace began again, still mispronouncing Harris’s name wrong. “I will say Kama-la’s name any way that I want to,” Mace snapped, defensively.
"Potayto, potahto.” No one cares. And I still don’t hear or read a difference in the name. “Kamala’s, Ka-malaaaaa.” Like what?! It’s the same thing. “Tomayto, tomahto.” My goodness, these people need to humble themselves. Can they feed the homeless or something? This goes beyond first-world issues and toddlers don’t even have these sorts of tantrums for such a nonissue.
“Let me just say this, because this congresswoman is a wonderful human being,” Dyson said gently. “But when you disrespect Kamala Harris by saying ‘you will call her whatever you want,’ I know you don’t intend it to be that way; that’s the history and legacy of white disregard for the humanity of Black people.”
No, it’s definitely not the “White disregard for the humanity of Black people.”
Firstly, according to The Irish Times, "Harris’s four-times-paternal-great-grandfather Hamilton Brown emigrated to Jamaica" and "became an enthusiastic slave owner on the sugar plantations." Additionally, Brown "opposed the abolition of slavery across the British Empire in 1832."
So it’s unclear if that is "the history and legacy of white disregard for the humanity of Black people" that he is referring to but that's neither here nor there. Obviously, ancestral crime is not a thing so none of that matters but the fact that the panel has decided to bring up "the history and legacy of white disregard" proves they have no idea what they are talking about and are just making things up.
There is no evidence that mispronouncing names is related to the "history and legacy of white disregard for the humanity of Black people." That’s not a thing; this is just a way for them to up their victim game because that’s all they have going for them. But again, Harris is not a victim and if we are going off the historical record, as they demand, her family spent a lot of time being the victimizer.
“Oh, so now you’re calling me racist,” Mace replied.
“I didn’t say that, I just said you weren’t a racist,” Dyson said. “No, you don’t have to intend racism to accomplish racism.”
Actually, you do “have to intend racism to accomplish racism.” That is the literal definition of racism, as it’s “the belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or superior to one another.”
In other words, mispronouncing someone’s name is not the “belief that different races possess distinct characteristics” and if anyone is being racist it’s them, as they are the ones so obsessed with skin color.
And enough with the whole “Kamala is a victim” mentality. She literally went to high school in one of the “wealthiest suburbs of Montreal.”
Even if Kamala Harris was whiter than Jill Biden, I am nearly 1,000 percent sure Mace would pronounce the name the same, as it has nothing to do with race and it’s about time these people find something significant to discuss rather than make problems that are not real.
