Nashville police release bodycam footage of shooting response, witness true heroism in action
The Nashville Police released the bodycam footage from yesterday's elementary school shooting, and there's only one word to describe the officers involved: heroes. I hope the Uvalde Police Department mandates this video as part of its training.
The footage was taken from Officers Rex Engelbert and Michael Collazo. It shows the officers entering the school and sprinting toward the gunfire. They clearly communicate the entire time. They never hesitate. It's chilling to watch.
Engelbert's footage shows him confronting the shooter diagonally across what appears to be a large atrium. The shooter stands by a large window. Engelbert fires, and she goes down.
[Warning: the video is quite graphic and shows the moment the shooter is neutralized.]
Reports say the officers received the first 911 call around 10:13 AM, and by 10:27, the shooter was dead. So that's exactly one hour less than it took the Uvalde Officers last year. And I'm not sure how many officers responded in Nashville, but it seems like a lot less than Uvalde's 376.
At one point in the footage, the blurred body of a little girl can be seen on the ground as the officers run by. It's unclear which victim this was, but it may have been nine-year-old Evelyn Dieckhaus. Evelyn died while trying to pull the fire alarm to stop the shooter. She's also a hero.
I don't have to explain to you how unbelievably tragic this all is. And the immediate calls for gun control are certainly not helping. But thank the Lord for the heroes in the Metro Nashville Police Department for this absolutely incredible response. Without them, it would have been even worse.
