Democrat LaToya Cantrell, the mayor of New Orleans, says she is doing the work of the taxpayers. That work has taken her on lavish trips to France and Switzerland on the taxpayers' dime. But don't you dare criticize her! Because she's a black woman, and it's unsafe to fly coach.

At a press conference where she was challenged on $30,000 worth of travel expenses, Cantrell claimed the accommodations are a matter of security and not luxury. “As all women know, our health and safety are often disregarded and we are left to navigate alone. [...] Anyone who wants to question how I protect myself just doesn’t understand the world black women walk in."

It appears part of that business done on behalf of the city of New Orleans required $10,000 on her own flatbed seat to Switzerland. Another $18,000 in luxury airfare was spent on a trip to France so the mayor could sign a "symbolic partnership" agreement with a small city on the Mediterranean Sea. The total cost of that symbolic trip was $43,000.

Not being a black woman myself, it is true I don't understand the world they walk in. Maybe flying economy is a risk to their health, safety, and well-being. But I'd have to assume she could have been just as safe in comfort or comfort plus. Playing the race card to dismiss valid criticism only shines a brighter spotlight on how taxpayers are having their taxes wasted.
