NPR Told 'Gosnell' Filmmakers Not to Use "Abortion" in Promotional Advertising
Open question for pro-choice people everywhere: if there's nothing wrong with abortion, if abortion is something which we should shout out in pride, why must the left continue to hide abortion, or in this case, the very word itself? Producers of the film Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer, (our friends Ann McElhinney and Phelim McAleer) were told by NPR to cut the word "abortion" from paid advertising:
Sullivan, who was prepared to spend as much as six figures, crafted his ad copy to answer the question you’re probably asking: Who is Gosnell? The proposed ad was as follows, “Support for this NPR program comes from the film Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer. The film is the true story of abortionist Kermit Gosnell. A story the mainstream media tried to cover up because it reveals the truth about abortion.”
A little wordy, but accurate to the plot of the film. NPR's biggest trigger wasn't overuse of "the" but abortion. The left's most sacred sacrament which shall not be named when paired with "serial killer."
According to e-mails provided to The Daily Beast, NPR’s representative ran it up the legal flagpole and came back with a disappointing answer. In addition to other minor tweaks to the wording, their response stated, “The word ‘abortionist’ will also need to be changed to the neutral word ‘doctor.’”
To the left, there's no higher calling than a man or woman who chops up and sucks babies out of the womb. Abortion must be protected at all costs. Up to and including banning the word in conjunction with negative press. In this case, an abortion doctor who kept aborted baby heads in jars. A little macabre for the rosy abortion image we're sold form our intellectual betters on the left.
Because NPR doesn't have a problem using "abortion" in conjunction with stories of martyrism:
It’s still unclear why the term “abortion doctor” couldn’t be included. A quick search turns up past NPR stories with titles like, “Joyce Carol Oates' New Novel Begins With an Abortion Doctor's Murder” and “Abortion Doctor Killer Appeals to Kansas High Court." NPR even did a special series called “Training the next generation of abortion doctors.” Heck, there was even an NPR news story about Kermit Gosnell himself, and it was headlined, “Convicted Philadelphia Abortion Doctor Gets Life in Prison.”
But when filmmakers wanted to accurately advertise their film, about an abortionist who's killed a few folks during his practicing days, suddenly NPR found the word triggering.
As the writer at The Daily Beast points out, stories like this are why conservatives say media is biased against them. Stories like this are why Trump telling CNN "You're fake news" resonate. If the left wants to regain any semblance of objectivity, a little fair play may be required.
I still want an answer from the left, though. If there's nothing wrong with "abortionist" and "abortion," why the insistence to cover up the practice?
