New York’s City Council is advancing a plan that could kill off monuments honoring figures such as George Washington and Christopher Columbus.

The proposal before the Cultural Affairs Committee stipulates that public art that depicts someone who has a connection to slavery or “crimes against humanity” be taken down or have an “explanatory plaque” put up.

This would potentially include the removal of George Washington, Peter Stuyvesant and Christopher Columbus statues.

“This bill would require the Public Design Commission (PDC) to publish a plan to remove works of art on City property that depict a person who owned enslaved persons or directly benefited economically from slavery, or who participated in systemic crimes against indigenous peoples or other crimes against humanity," the proposal states.

The bill would also require the Department of Transportation to consult with the Department of Education to install plaques on sidewalks or other public space adjacent to schools that are named after a person who fits the criteria.

I really don’t know what idiot needs an explanation on who Washington was, but I am sure NYC is full of them.

“This is little more than an attempt by the radical left to rewrite our nation’s history. These men all had an enormous impact on this country, and these statues commemorating their achievements have been in place for decades,” Republican Joann Ariola said. “The radical left has been trying to reframe our nation as one born from evil, and it is time we put our foot down and say enough is enough. The Founding Fathers and the others who worked so hard to establish this great country should be celebrated, not eliminated from memory.”

It is weird how they want to take down statues of Washington when he struggled with the institution of slavery and wrote of his desire to end it. At the end of his life, he even freed all of the enslaved people he owned.

It was people like him who started the movement to end slavery.

But progressives are so obsessed with rewriting history that they don’t like to mention that part.

This is right out of George Orwell's 1984.

The only way progressives can convince people that America’s past is inherently evil is by destroying history. That is what communists do.

Monuments were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution in China in an attempt to destroy the culture and replace it with Marxist ideology.

Communists destroy cultural artifacts as an assault on this country's foundational principles.

Kind of a weird coincidence how NYC is being taken over by migrants at the same time history is being destroyed. I guess they will never know who George Washington actually was.

But that is nothing more than a coincidence that culture will be destroyed and replaced at the same exact time. Nothing to see here.

It is pretty obvious that NYC is being run by people who not only hate this country, but they actually want to destroy everything about it.
